just for the record the round will really explode, even if it wont fire, so if you fire it in very close proximity you could seriously injure them. you'll probably be fine if you keep your distance, but someone will probably call the cops and you might even get hit up with a disturbing the peace charge. i'd 100% recommend just editing in the sounds. if done well, you won't be able to tell

Blanks only look nice if you record it coming out of a rifle with some high quality recording gear but yeah, if you use common sense and don't shoot your friend point blank in the face then you oughta be fine. I still wouldn't recommend it because there's an unacceptable potential for a deadly forget-up, gun effects look better when they're edited in imo

It should be fine if you're outside city limits you're shooting 500m away from someone else's property which we are

Lol you wont get charged with a crime for firing pistol blanks on your own private property. Maybe if you put 200 rounds through a browning M2 into a pile of firecrackers, but a couple of low power blanks isn't gonna disturb your neighbors anymore than a motorcycle driving past their house or a helicopter flying overhead.

I stand by my statement.  You get ok sound on the first one because of the echoes, but the actual report is meh.  The combat footage is exactly what I'm talking about, you get "tok-tok-tok" at the same loudness as people talking and no muzzle flash.

The heat shootout scene is also notable because they used on-scene audio.  But it's legendary for a reason, they put a lot of effort into filming it.  This is not the result you're going to get from someone asking "should I use blanks". 


Hell, I say use the blanks and if it doesn't work out punch it up with after effects.

Shoot the gun with a real cartridge and only record the sound. Then pretend to shoot your friend (with an empty gun) and edit the footage to have a gun flash and put the sound over it

A local guy in my neighborhood died from a blank because he didn't think it could kill him. Of course he put it to his head which made it worse but i wouldn't forget around with blanks unless they're Hollywood specific types used in PROP guns.
