http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/04/world/europe/russia-plutonium-nuclear-treaty.html

a treaty limiting nuclear material possession between the powers was cancelled today at the behest of russian president vladimir putin, who cited american infidelity on their side of the deal as their casus belli. the deal encompassed the destruction of weapons-grade plutonium to prevent it from being used in nuclear weapons and had kept the two superpowers from kickstarting a new arms race, but those days are over.

in other news, the US suspended all diplomatic contact with russia regarding the syrian crCIA, perhaps as a consequence of the plutonium cancellation but also perhaps as a consequence of the syrian army's increased aggression in the civil war. regardless, the civil war has now returned to its fractured self with no cooperation or end in sight.

russia moved an anti-missile shield into syria a few weeks ago and just today brought in an anti-air missile battery. due to the civil war's resumption, russia stands against the US and her allies -- as such, the AA defense is poised to shoot down any coalition aircraft flying into russian-protected airspaces

speaking of moving missiles, russia has moved nuclear weapons into the kaliningrad oblast, a non-contiguous spit of land sitting next to NATO members poland and lithuania. fun times.

so the french submitted a resolution to the UN to halt all airstrikes in syria and establish a giant no-fly zone. humanitarian would be trucked in during the interim and the truce would eventually evolve into a peace (sound familiar?) but russia vetoed the move. russia then submitted the exact same deal but without halting airstrikes or creating a no-fly zone, however their resolution didn't receive enough votes and as such was defeated. so the civil war rages on.

china, venezuela, and a few other countries have thrown their weight behind russia's decision to veto the measure, saying the french peace didn't address rebel activity and thus allowed the US to secretly pursue a regime change in syria despite the peace. other countries like the UK and US stand behind the french and condemn the russian veto.

US, russia, and other regional powers like turkey and saudi arabia have sent representatives to switzerland to discuss an end to the syrian civil war (again). the russian foreign minister made a comment shortly before arriving, saying that russo-american relations were at a 40-year low, so don't expect anything concrete as far as peace is concerned
