Author Topic: Anyone use Windows 7 still?  (Read 5558 times)

I upgraded to w10 last night because i was getting fed up with stuff on windows 7 (custom theming is a giant pain in the ass)

Wait did you have to pay? I missed the one year free thing.

I have my windows 10 upgrade downloaded but I'm guessing I can't get it anyway and I would have to buy it.

I was gone for the last couple months that windows was free thats why I wasn't able to upgrade.

And so is Windows 10.
It's a good OS if you don't mind the flaws. I do mind the flaws, so I don't think it's good. (For me.)

On a broad level, Windows 10 gives you DX12
I don't need DX12 because I don't plan on playing any exclusive titles. If a company makes a DX12 exclusive game, that's their own loss, not mine.

and a much more capable touch interface for a touch device
I don't use a touch device with windows and honest to god never want to. I've tried it before (Yes, with windows 10) and I hated it. Mouse and keyboard all the way.

as well as general performance and battery life improvements.
That's very much debatable, on some hardware you get better performance and on some other hardware it's equal or worse. Experiences vary. And as far as I know the only real proven battery life improvement was on their new browser, which even if I did switch to windows 10, I have absolutely no desire to use.

Granted this isn't much to really warrant switching, but if you're gaming on Windows 7 still you're doing it wrong unless your GPU doesn't support DX12.
Yo, there is no "right" way to game, and when I do buy my new GPU (i will eventually) it'll have Vulkan support. DX12 and Vulkan are, as far as benchmarks are concerned, pretty much on equal ground.

For me personally, I like Win10's UI way more than 8.1's.
I like the icons better but with a modern-looking start menu installed on 8.1, this is honestly my ideal. Windows 7 is a step below. I personally feel that overall the UI is a downgrade, but slightly above Win7.

How much CP do you have on your computer?

my biggest gripe with windows 10 is probably the settings app. i'd just prefer there to be more detailed and advanced options there, i've found myself having to dig into administrative tools to change things like automatic updates too often than i feel like should be necessary. i'd say that this is something the average user shouldn't worry about in most cases, but the direction they've taken with auto updating is pretty gross imo. there should definitely be a completely obvious and transparent "do not automatically update me, do not automatically restart my computer under any circumstances" options like there's always been available for all users, no excuses. so i guess my biggest gripe is actually windows update

Compatability issues are the result of numerous contributing factors, not one single issue. They can affect anyone, and the more software someone uses in their workflow, the more likely that something will go wrong when doing something as significant as an OS change. If someone doesn't see any need to risk that happening to them, it's just delusional to try and convince them by pretending that the potential issues simply don't exist.
This. I'd have to do more research on W10 to find out what it does and doesn't like (in terms of programs). If I were to get a computer with W10 it would be for gaming and gaming only.

My biggest gripe was the homepage. It took me 10-15 minutes just to find the stupid browser.... which I had to find all on my own because my mom knew much less than I did at the time. Other than that everything was just substandard. Annoying, but not rage inducing.
