i'd like to say be aware of what you say near people, and realize you're just joking

people have a difficult time to determine whether you are joking or not and people don't recognize how obvious your joke may or may not be, and that should be understandable

i understand you don't mean it and it was all of a joke, but just understand the person probably doesn't joke like that
