Well before the Nov. 15th Ascension update and the introduction of the Alpha and Omega clones, you could make an account without subbing but the account was only good for a 14 day trial and you would have to subscribe to continue playing. Now with the A and O clone states, its technically possible to play for free as an alpha clone but its still restricted (Not as much as an unsubbed account before Nov. 15 but still restricted) but if you subscribe, your clone state is activated into Omega which is entirely unrestricted with none of the limitations of the Alpha state.
