Author Topic: help me think of motivations for a dnd villain in a one off  (Read 984 times)

So I'm thinking of a christmas one-off but I cant decide the motivations for the evil dude. They're in the town of Hiemslux for different reasons but one of the characters is visiting his brother and his brother's family, but the village gets attacked by snow zombies and they eventually track it after a couple days to a nearby cave where his niece is being extorted, promised some priceless piece of knowledge in the beginning by some thug but I don't really have a reason for the thug to do that. they gotta kill the thug and he has some bad guys but i don't know why the heck they would do that.

one off = one session

give ideas

its for D&D, it says in the title
I didn't and don't know what that means, unfortunately. Thanks for being so helpful..

The girl could know the location of something valuable to the guy trying to break her.

Maybe the thug is a vengeful scholar/wiz/sorcerer that is trying to bait and switch them into a trap to get his revenge.

Depends, do your players even care?
one of the characters is visiting his brother and his brother's family
Guess they do.

Terrorism to achieve some political goal?

He would rather summon a hoard of zombies than spend one more day being a market square Santa.

santa claus

they've all been naughty and he's here to punish them

niece has had problems getting a husband her entire life and some shady guy told her he would tell her how and then extorted her for money in said cave and then you show up and the thug is completely unrelated to the big bad guy who actually lives in the cave BEHIND the cave and just sends zombies to steal potato seeds because he has a mental problem

canta slaus, chaotic good barbarian socalist warlord, is bringing presents for the townpeople. the party can be assured that he will be bring them each a piece of (decent) magical equipment, which will also serve as their reward for the quest. unfortunately, attacked and captured along the road, his famous red suit is taken and used to impersonate him alongside an illusion spell. when canta slaus arrives in town, he begins making odd demands. in order for the spirit of christmas to stay alive, and maintain the gift-giving tradition, he will need one/a few sacrifices. preferably children.

as the party races to stop/investigate the sacrifices they discover that this man is not in fact canta slaus--for example, he is eating reindeer stew, something canta would never do. they slowly realize that a terrible cult has impersonated canta in order to secure the sacrifice to resurrect the fallen Winter God on Winter Solstice, who will bring about an eternal winter unless the party can find and free Canta Slaus and help him defeat the terrible evil.
