the united states is sometimes called israel's greatest ally because it automatically vetoes any measure that isn't in the interest of israel, but today is a different story. a resolution to call for an end to israeli encroachments on palestinean land passed without american protest, marking a new chapter in israeli-american relations. for the record, president obama and israeli prime minister ben netanyahu do not have a good relationship thanks in part to netanyahu's eccentricity and maladroit diplomacy, so this move could be seen as the culmination of diplomatic grievances as well as obama's lameduck power game.

the israeli prime minister has announced that israel will go against UN mandate and defy the resolution.

Christians gon be mad
just possibly

My Jewish friend was really butt-hurt about this, but here's the facts:
  • The UN has 'condemned' the Israeli settlements. They have not authorized sanctions or urged the ICC to prosecute.
  • The US did not vote for this resolution; they abstained, which is a pretty significant shift in US foreign policy, considering that we have veto power in UNSC.
  • It's hard to really pin-down whether these Israeli settlements are actually illegal because the territorial borders of the three areas of the West Bank are non-contiguous and poorly defined.
I'm not concerned that this resolution is a problem. Obviously conservative Israelis are going to lose their minds about it, but in my mind, there's no doubt that they've encroached on Palestinian land to some degree. That's gotta stop if there's ever going to be peace.

The religious-right in America is probably the strongest advocate for Israel.

>UN ever taking action against israel in any way shape or form
they're gonna 'condemn' israel's actions, but they'll never do anything

to some extent I can understand the hysteria. Israel depends on us to continue existing.
