Author Topic: Why are there no sci-fi movies where humanity is the "alien" species?  (Read 1929 times)

So, I recently just finished the Mass Effect trilogy (fantastic game series, by the way) for the second time, which started me down this train of thought. Can anyone tell me a movie where humanity has either superior or the same level of technology as the encountered alien species? It seems like in every modern sci-fi movie/series (Transformers, Independence Day, etc.), humanity has to be on the bottom end of the spectrum. I'm not saying that it's never been done (for example, Star Trek and Star Wars had humanity on the same level), but I would love to see it done more often. I just wanted to get this out there and get other people's thoughts on it.

this is what made Avatar stick out for me

I wondered that too. I've also been wondering why aliens refer to us as "Humans" or "People". Why don't they refer to us as the "Aliens"?

Almost completely forgot about that movie, probably because I wasn't a big fan of it. The concept was definitely what I'm talking about, though. Too bad humanity had to be evil in this one.

Yeah, if there was some sort of translator, then the word "people" would be very confusing used in cross-species conversations. "Humans" would just be the name for our species, though. For example, in Mass Effect, the four main species are Asari, Turians, Salarians, and Humans.

Planet 51 has humans seen as aliens.

Oh, yeah, that one. I think I saw it once. I'm not a big fan of animated movies unless they're done extremely well.

You're looking in the wrong place.

There are plenty of non sci-fi movies that have humans as the alien species, just look up illegal Immigration documentaries.

I immediately thought of Avatar. I thought that movie sucked. Since when do primitive savage tribes triumph over America?

it'd be like to serve man except to serve [alien race]

soilent green!!!

Because most writers are human.
I don't think this article is talking about the same thing. I'm talking from a technology standpoint, not how many show up in the movie. I liked Star Wars because humanity was on the same level as the rest of the galaxy.
