I have limited experience with fruit/dessert pies, as most pies here fall into the savoury category (of which chicken and mushroom is my favourite).
However I do enjoy an Apple Pie and its cousin, the Apple Crumble.
I think however that I prefer these perhaps as a receptacle for cream and custard, so without those they are quite dry.
Cake on the otherhand offers a wider range of choice, and also gives access to cream and ice-cream.
There are also a lot of fringe-cakes, like Sticky Toffee Pudding or Cheesecake which sit on the boundary of cake-hood. These, if accepted, can easily outclass a pie.
The big downside to cakes however is that they can be very very filling, and often room needs to be made for them. It's easier to eat a pie after a heavy meal than it is a cake.
I think overall I prefer cakes, as wide a category as that is. However on any given day I could probably handle a pie more easily.
