What is this plebian "artistic design" stuff that keeps entering my ears, I thought it was completely metaphysical!

Can you be a bit more specific?

How can art teach or convey meaning when it is completely abstract?

art may be subjective but there are known patterns that people respond to. if you appeal to those patterns then you get a common or predictable result, thus the usage of artistic design.
