Author Topic: [NEWS] Republican bill will reduce free school lunch  (Read 20700 times)

Should the student be punished for their parents spending habits and go hungry? No. If this happens, call CPS.
do you know what a colossal waste of manpower and time getting the child protective services involved over financial mismanagement is?

So without having to re-read the whole topic - do we actually know IF this is being abused, and if so, by how much? It's all well and good to try and introduce proper means testing but it may not actually be worth it.

not feeding your children because you squander your money is neglect, though.

If a household is legitimately unable to pay for food, they should be able to provide appropriate proof, which as of right now isn't a requirement and should probably change.

Not financial mismanagement, child abuse by part of financial mismanagement.

Yes. My school abuses this program heavily to attempt to get more money out of the government. The students here- they have iPhones, all the latest stuff, their parents are rich (and they have money!), but they get free lunches.

I'm looking for numbers, not anecdotes

i went to one high school that had free lunch because it had a highly low-income composition, so people that didn't necessarily need it still got free lunch, but that was a separate tier or some stuff. i don't know the specifics of the law here but it could very well be the same kind of situation where the funds were offered based on a look on overall school demographics rather than looking at any individual students

We serve about ~6,654 lunches that are free/reduced. (2012 was a year where I think school was shut down)

From first-hand experience, ~50% of the people who get free lunches end up throwing it away or not eating it at all.

I meant official numbers around abuse, not numbers served and then another anecdote to estimate lol. Has there been an official probe?

there is no number or statistic for the amount of free lunches being abused. nobody has bothered conducting research on the topic, and the only company that receives the school lunch statistics are National School Lunch Program, and they have no way of checking financial statements of families who they allow eligibility of.

In other words, the only 'proof' is anecdotes of several forumers.

Another interesting thing I noticed on https://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d12/tables/dt12_112.asp

If you look at the number and percentage graph I linked at the very top, schools with 75% or more students eligible for free or reduced lunch are 70-80% black and hispanic, with only 6.2% white. With that in mind, 45% black students is in high poverty, as well as hispanic. If environment wasn't a factor, that'd mean that nearly 40% of those schools mostly on free lunch are actually in high poverty.

With the data, it can be concluded that almost 60% or more of the 12 million non-white students on free lunch are in high poverty

if anything, if the scope were to shorten, white students would take the brunt of the free lunch punch, with only a few black and hispanic & other students getting it too

If you can't afford three bucks a day to feed your kid then you either a. are a coke addict or b. should have your kids taken away from you
