Author Topic: thoughts and opinions on climate change/global warming?  (Read 5749 times)

People forget that humans are as much a force of nature as a river flow. This is the standard advance on a planet. The climate and eco system will adapt as they always have. Not a hard concept.

This is the same thing people are having trouble with accepting species extinction.
Humans are more like that boulder than could fall any second now and kill you. We've enough nuclear weapons to liquidate the planet. We're a much bigger impact than you think.

What's stopping you from saying the same thing about, say, nuking a coral reef?

Moral platitudes are nice and all but like, the actual scientific research says something completely different here.

Also like, mass extinctions are 'natural' too, but that doesn't mean it won't forget up our way of life terribly.

The climate and eco system will adapt as they always have.

...Independently of the human race...

That's why the scientific community's tune changed from prevention to adaption. Because if we don't adapt, we all face the risk of having our way of life become completely unsustainable.

We are part of the eco system. If life becomes unsustainable then people will die out, emissions will go down, and nature will reset. C'est la vie.

Or just like, put some basic environmental regulations and work towards more sustainable forms of energy? If it's between that and cleaning up the damage of overzealous capitalists for centuries to come, why not just play it safe?

I find it hard that someone with kids could have this thought process.

Nature won't reset, it'll just die out and our planet will become another lifeless husk of severe temperature. It's our job to make sure that nature bends to the will of humanity, otherwise we'll die out, which is potentially disasterous if we're the only sentient beings in the universe.

isn't it kind of inevitable regardless if we're speeding it up or not
with volcanoes shooting out much more carbon than cars could dream of and all that

We discuss modern cars which are hybrid or electric in that thread. We don't talk about trucks, vans, or old fuel-swallowing cars.

I find it hard that someone with kids could have this thought process.

I know that they won't live long enough for this to affect them.

That's not how it's ever worked in the past. This entire topic is 100% speculation on the future. When scientists can't even predict the weather with half decent accuracy you would do well to remain skeptical.

Yes, because our planet turning into Venus is super far fetched.

You're the only one speculating here.

Any conversation about the future is pure speculation.

Yes I agree. It is super far fetched.
