Because in the US colleges are all businesses that want to capitalize off of your success. Just take a look at their sports department- they have students working as almost full-time athletes and refuse to pay them

because the government guarantees loans to students regardless of credit or lack thereof.

Colleges also spend a lot of money on random stuff that the average person never uses. If they cut out all the unnecessary stuff at my college my tuition would probably go from 20k to 5k or 6k at the very most.
