Author Topic: [NEWS] College tuition now free for 125k a year and below families in NY  (Read 7185 times)

Maybe it's actually, y'know, a good thing that higher education has become the norm

it actually isn't; there's no huge demand for a lot of professional jobs since the market is already flooded with unemployed college graduates (degree inflation) whereas skilled trades are rising in demand as the handy baby boomers are beginning to retire

the fact that our society keeps pushing the idea that you need to go to college only adds to the issue, and kids' stress levels. schools (and parents) don't encourage kids to consider a skilled trade, they just throw standardized tests at them (and even classes to prepare for those tests) meant to scale their worthiness for particular colleges. so they grow up thinking of trade jobs as an underpaying and/or universally undesirable last resort. half a decade into a trade job and you could be making 50-60k easy without the +80k debt

You don't need a degree to prove yourself if you already can prove yourself from the loving ground up.

obviously a strong portfolio could still convince an employer to dismiss a lack of a degree. "college is a waste of time but you need a degree to do anything" i swear if you're living off welfare.......

i'm not saying it's necessarily good for the economy, nor that our current education structure is good, and i definitely don't support the massive price increases colleges are pushing just because they can, just that in general it is a good thing that people are striving to be more educated

On a related note NY taxes are outrageous, that's why my family moved

WAIT

EXCUSE ME WHAT

Does this mean I'm finally not going to have to pay out the ass for my college?

design a space bridge so gravity wont affect it and it won't fail, two careers + no college = key to success

Wow man I never said you don't need a loving degree for stuff like NASA. Get out of here.

You don't need a degree to design videogames.

are any of those even going to net you a decent living?
business owner might but a huuuuge majority of them fail within the first few years so it isnt even worth considering as a career path

are any of those even going to net you a decent living?

Depending on how good your videogames are, they can provide a living. Even independent.

A decent mom and pop shop business can make a living.

A store manager at walmart earns about 250,000 or more a year.

Even assistant managers make about 40,000-80,000 a year at walmart.

Do u know how hard it is to become an assistant manager / full manager with only a highschool diploma?

loving lmao good luck trying

where are you getting this data from? glassdoor.com is showing 150k as the "above average" salary, and most likely that data is coming from people with a lot of experience and a degree
