scp containment breach is pretty spooky

not the scariest game out there and a lot of the bad guys have really stiff animations and can look goofy but it's got it's good moments

also obligatory amnesia

Dead Space, Resident Evil 7, Alien: Isolation are 3 fantastic ones

I've heard very good things about resident evil 7, but a lot of people say the way to play it is in VR.
ya despite the graphical quality cuts its still a lot more horrifying and gut wrenching to see your "arm" cut off or you taking a chainsaw to the chest, esp when paired with good headphones

And if you have VR prepare for literally a thousand times the scary
Legitimate, actual terror

Silent Hill 1 or 2 is a good place to start.

does Quake count? if so, Quake.

you should play harvester I guess
iunno

obviously it isn't really all that 'horror' but spec ops: the line makes use of a battle torn & disaster-ridden dubai environment for some good moments (the graffiti they've got in the game is pretty good too), along with some mindforgetery the later you get into the game, but i wouldn't really consider it horror myself. the story does have it's flaws at moments, but i dunno, i think it'd be worth a look if you think you could get into that kind of stuff. it relies a bit more on the environment/story, some shock and i suppose psychological horror more than jumpscares or monsters
which really is what you and your team were the whole time
the very late game chapters can get a little bit silly but don't try to interpret them too deeply and you should be fine

SOMA
honestly SOMA should not be something you start out with. that game has an amazing and deep backstory that is in my opinion a requirement to know to enjoy the game best. reading all the official stories and watching the live actions has given me just as many hours of entertainment as the game itself alone.
playing the game alone would make it just good instead of amazing, again, in my opinion

Dead Space 1 & 2 are p good

don't get the third one that's stuff

lugi's mansion
do not play this game i had to be transported to the hospital for having 7 simultaneous heart attacks within 3 seconds of starting it
