memes aside, ghosts are probably a good historical example of a lot of psychological phenomena. take sleep paralysis. you wake up, and there's a something in the corner watching you. you can't move. it's terrifying.

then, you can move, and you tell everyone else. bam - instant ghost story. add some local cultural flavor in there and you have a legend.
