pretty much, kids went "oh hey those things are cool i gotta buy one!!!1!" when they saw it and they all got one and other people saw those making them want one, thus creating the big ass fad that it is now

It was originally made in small numbers for friends and family by a woman who made the first one for her autistic son AFAIK, but her patent ran out and she didn't renew it so some business snapped it up and started producing them en-masse and marketing them as a fad toy or something
