I'm guessing you want it for gaming, so I'm going to recommend the HP Pavilion Laptop with the 940MX, 12gb memory and 1tb hard drive, mainly because the other laptop doesn't say what GPU it has so it most likely has integrated graphics, and the 940mx GPU laptop has 12gb ram, 1tb hard drive and an i7.

I'm mostly going to use it over the summer, just to play games, watch videos, willy nilly, all that stuff. so alright.

If you can afford the second one why are you even looking at the first one

if you want third degree burns pick HP laptops
their laptop designs are actually legit impressively stuffty.

the hp pavillion dv6 from only a few years ago and their design hasn't changed much (the laptops you have shown in your example look similar) since literally had their heatsink connected to the aluminum casing, dissipating heat onto the case exactly where you'll be using it.

and it still runs as hot as a loving nuclear power reactor even on the inside.

on top of apple-style planned obsolesce where parts are designed to fail some time after the warranty period.

thinkpad t420-t520 for the best keyboard ever in a laptop
otherwise any thinkpad in the t series is good

I'm pretty sure the 940mx is enough to play most games out there.

Spring for a laptop with a 950m or 1050(ti) if you can, but a 940mx would service those games decently.
