Author Topic: creepy old stuff: fearful harmony & personified fear on the PSX  (Read 5386 times)

the playstation 1 had some interesting but also creepy bugs/glitches when it came to loading discs. they were named fearful harmony & personified fear. the source of the names are something i don't know, but they are a tad bit fitting.

fearful harmony, the first sort of variant, occurs usually when an improper disc is inserted, like an ubuntu cd or a backup of a game you owned without using a modchip. this can also be done by severely loving up your BIOS.

instead of simply erroring out, it instead forgets up the sony computer entertainment logo, with different effects depending on the model and console used. the most important point, and what adds to the name fearful harmony, is that it will play overextended and delayed versions of the chimes you get while booting, in a ever so noticably increasing pitch.

it can be very creepy if you leave it on and don't know the effects of sound and other visual effects exist.

video footage with high quality audio here.
another version with a very odd visual effect.

personified fear is another glitch that can occur, typically with very scratched game discs or poorly burned backups.

contrasting to fearful harmony, its effect has no visuals, only fading to a grey/black screen when it occurs. audio wise, also contrasting, it does the playstation logo audio effect in a sudden, loud and quick sweep, fading away moments after.

this can make someone possibly a bit anxious depending on how scared they can be from things like this. the blackness and no audio might make someone confused and spooked, possibly waiting for a jumpscare (which obviously doesn't exist)

example, not much too it from anything else
bad le spooky furry animation that does not need to exist

i personally love old glitches like these, and sometimes just odd stuff in software. must be why i like the xbox hidden ambience stuff so much.

that's really loving cool
tbh i was expecting a story of how you were afraid of your PSX

i was just looking at these and bios corruption montages last night, wow

Before it launched the console was code named PlayStation X. The gaming media called it PSX, and even though the X was dropped the name stuck, especially online, where people would rather say PSX than spell out "PlayStation." The 90s were big on abbreviations (LMAO, for instance, and GCN for GameCube).
There was also no PS2 yet, so it wasn't called PS1 until PS2 started coming out.
In 2003 there was a PS2/DVR machine released that was actually named PSX, which was intentionally named after the nickname given to the PS1.

the ps2 red screen of death still gives me a weird pang of fear in my stomach

do you guys remember the music from the og xbox and how loving creepy it was

do you guys remember the music from the og xbox and how loving creepy it was

definitely freaked me the forget out as a kid

the sounds are actually public domain audio from NASA transmissions during the apollo days

how is this creepy
Kids tend to get freaked out by trivial things a lot of the time.
right but that was like 20 years ago
it's the playstation 1, call it that
A lot of people got used to calling it the PSX and the name just stuck to them over the years. I just call it the PS1 especially since the real PSX is that weird Japanese PS2 DVR hybrid.
