Author Topic: what are some good free picture-editing software that is compatible with cintiq  (Read 2005 times)

I'm getting a cintiq tablet in the next couple of weeks, and I'm trying to figure out how everything works beforehand so I can get ready for when it ships

I understand that cintiq uses photo-editing software like paint.net and PhotoShop but I don't know exactly what it's compatible with and I don't want to spend more money trying to figure that out

/title
I'm particularly looking for something as close to PhotoShop as possible that's free and can work with cintiq tablets

first off can someone explain the specifics of what software is acceptable for cintiq tablets

gimp

you're probably going to want something that can take advantage of the features like pressure sensitivity and other pen functions. try smth like krita, firealpaca, or medibang paint. i'm assuming you got a cintiq for drawing so those would probably be a good fit, not sure of good free software specifically for photography tho if that's smth you need

just a heads up gimp supports pressure sensitivity too

he wants photo editing, not painting

he wants photo editing, not painting

I want a bit of both like I have with paint.net now, just easier to use

and yes I'm getting a cintiq to draw

I know PaintTool SAI is good for drawing and what-not

you dont want gimp

on a scale of complexity where does gimp place and does that mean that it has more value

honestly, i'd just try a few different things and see which one feels best and has all the features you need easily accessible. if they're all free software, you're not going to lose much other than time trying them out, and the benefits of finding a software environment that's comfortable and intuitive for you are worth it

don't worry too much about compatibility, the tablet can basically just act as a mouse in any situation. you'd probably just look for programs that support pressure sensitivity and other pen input features so you can fully take advantage of the tablet

As much as I like painttool sai it's not very compatible with my surface tablet which I guess it a good thing because then I had to learn photoshop ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

on a scale of complexity where does gimp place and does that mean that it has more value
gimp is basically photoshop with a more outdated and harder to use interface

you can download a photoshop looking theme or a more modern looking version of the ui

I know PaintTool SAI is good for drawing and what-not
paint tool sai isn't free

on a scale of complexity where does gimp place and does that mean that it has more value

complexity is it's just a free photoshop which means it's got a lot and lot of more tools, features, and filters. it has more value but it has its differences.

it's for image DESIGNING and photoshopping more or differently than drawing or painting however the brushes have some neat textures. some people prefer gimp but your best bet is SAI.

paint tool sai isn't free

yes it is...?
