Author Topic: Add ons on a flash drive?  (Read 1340 times)

I recently switched from desktop gaming to laptop gaming. I want to download add ons to my laptop, but i am afraid it will take up too much storage and overall slowdown my computer. I had an idea but i'm not sure if it would work. My idea was to buy a flash drive and just download all of the add ons onto the flash-drive rather than on my computer. If i did that, would i still be able to plug in the flash-drive and use the add ons in game when I want to host?

hahahahahahaa

ot:
No. The most your addons should take up is like 2 gb, and unless you have a 100gb hard drive or something like that, you should be fine.

Not unless you put the entire game on the flash drive.

my addons folder is only 703 mb and that's because i have like duplicates of nearly every weapon in blockland in there along with a lot of uncompressed wip stuff like music so i'm sure you'll be fine putting everything on your normal harddrive

as others have said hard drive space probably won't be an issue

however if you really need to put your add-ons folder on a flash drive, and you're using windows, you can use a symlink.  It's like- an advanced shortcut that works for applications such as blockland.

I tested it out on my computer, running cmd as an admin.
Code: [Select]
mklink /D "C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\BlocklandDefalt\Add-Ons\" "G:\Add-ons\"
Worked like a charm.  I can now put all of my add-ons on a flash drive.

the real space-consuming part of BL is the cache.db, which depending on how many different servers you join can grow to a size anywhere between 500 mb to 2gb. the addons folder in comparison will probably never grow more than 500mb if you dont download literally every addon you see.

you can probably symlink cache.db, and worst comes to worst just run BL off of a flash drive (put all required files there, and use a .bat-called launcher/.bat). 4GB is plenty.

K thanks i will just keep them on here

no joke before my cache corrupted it was 14GB, currently at 7GB, this is years collecting add-ons, don't need to worry getting that large

wtf that sounds like amnesia music

I could barely fit 1/4 of my addons into an 8gb flash drive. Good luck
