its a giant cashgrab that sony knows is guaranteed to make money no matter how bad it is because little kids are going to watch it and then get the just dance and candy crush apps on their phones which will make sony money. critics have definitely taken notice of this, and there may actually be quite a hit since critics are actively advising people to not allow their kids to see the movie
This emoji movie is so stuff, but what's worse is that on more than one occasion I've heard friends and family genuinely express a desire to watch it.

You are part of the problem.

I think some people were hoping for a "so bad it's good" kind of film, but those are really only possible with indie productions. This is a multi-million dollar film.

While Leondis, who is gay, has stated he intends this as an allegory for the tribulations faced by the non-heteroloveual community, any social commentary is stymied by the execution. The film’s insistent feel-goodery and occasional nods to feminism (delivered by a spunky blue-haired hacker emoji, voiced by Anna Faris) ring false. Product-placement mashups Toy Story and The Lego Movie had the purity of playtime to seal in the sentimentality; somehow it’s not as endearing in a film built around the apps we use to kill time while sat on the toilet.
I love how feminism is basically reduced to a necessary ingredient for making a film. In doing so any actual political message has been pretty much removed.

what a wonderful cinematic masterpiece. it moved me to tears, and gave me a new outlook on life. definitely a movie worth watching several times.
