Author Topic: new computer plan for christmas?  (Read 1601 times)

yes. i know. it's very early to be considering this but i need to think about this because i'm concerned that my current PC is dying

the damn thing is like 5 years old, and it's starting to have a lot of sudden lag spikes. the CPU isn't the best either, and its age shows whenever i try running certain programs.

for reference, here's my current specs on this old thing:

anyways, enough about my old computer for now. people can reply about that if they really feel like it

i need a computer that's not exactly amazingly powerful, but not weak/not made for games, either.

the games i usually play are like
- team fortress 2
- terraria
- minecraft (sometimes, not too much anymore)
- enter the gungeon
- (rarely) garry's mod
- blockland
- 20XX

and probably some other games i'll buy over christmas sale or my birthday if i have any leftover money i guess

basically i play games that can be intensive at times, but most of the time not really. nothing like crysis or some stuff like that

in terms of applications, i sometimes do video editing with like sony vegas. i've also been thinking about getting back into after effects music visualizers but that's something i gotta consider first.

nothing too intensive there, though. i'll sometimes tinker with audacity or fl studio, maybe forget with modules using openMPT. having more RAM for the memory sponge known as chrome might be nice too

budget-wise, i'm not too sure. maybe around $500-$600, but i can ask my mom about that later.

i've been considering maybe prebuilts from places like iBUYPOWER or CyberPowerPC, but i've heard bad things about prebuilts, at least from places like that or something. idk.

so forums, do you think you could help me with my issue? maybe help me come up with something that might work out well? i'll try to make a build on PCPartPicker and post it here, maybe get some thoughts on it.

I'm not savvy with computers but it's good that you showed the specs for yours because my motherboard is about 20 degrees cooler on my end so that may be your problem

on the other hand your graphics card is 30 degrees cooler than mine so there's my problem

was able to come up with this. my mom does a lot of work with IT and PC building so maybe she knows some better parts. i'm up for suggestions from here too since she won't be back in like 8 hours

Honestly I'd recommend the above build but maybe with a GT 1030, it's cheaper and can run games pretty well, and maybe drop the power supply and memory a bit.

trying to avoid the GT series because i'd like some features like shadowplay and such
PSU and memory i can probably do, give me a sec

edit:
couldn't find any memory cheaper for 16GB, although i'm just looking at PCpartpicker. maybe there's some on amazon or whatever

what are these shadowplay features that everybody wants?

what are these shadowplay features that everybody wants?

recording seems to be much faster than using something like fraps or similar.
bandicam has it sorta baked into the program using 'NVENC', which is what i'm assuming it is. it lets me record and not have a heart attack with the FPS while doing it

im an official shadowplay shill
its much easier than having to open fraps or some stuff every time something funny happens in-game plus you can hit a certain key and itll save the last 5 minutes of gameplay

fraps also takes up a ridiculous amount of filesize
20min with shadowplay from what i've heard appears to be around 3GB
fraps makes it like 80GB
so unless you have an external you are basically forgeted when using something like fraps

imo you should go with a Ryzen 3 1200 and a B350 motherboard

they'te both much cheaper and you can OC the R3 1200 on the stock cooler using that B350 motherboard

Also you don't need a 100 buck case, try to get one cheaper.

also if you're getting a drive get this, it accepts blurays along with dvd and cd https://pcpartpicker.com/product/QC648d/lg-uh12ns40-blu-ray-reader-dvdcd-writer-uh12ns40

any better?

Remove that T4 and the build is solid!

Remove that T4 and the build is solid!

cool, thanks!
by the way, i noticed this offer on a computer that seems way too low to be right:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01J99IRLG/ref=sr_1_15_olp?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1503421529&sr=1-15&keywords=nvidia+computer&condition=used

that can't be right, no? in a case like that seems more 1000s than 500

sounds like shadowplay is exactly the same as the windows 10 built in game bar thing?
or is there a benefit to using one over the other (I have both, just wondering if I should look into shadowplay)
