Author Topic: need some advice for writing resume  (Read 1058 times)

so i haven't previously written a resume and i sort of believe that's why i never get any interviews.

i pretty much have no clue how to start other than to put my personal information down. some people say to write an objective, some say don't so idk.

i have no previous job experience so an empty resume isn't going to look good. the most "job-like" things i do is help my family around with vehicles, yards, carpeting, etc. that might prove responsibility at least but i'm not so sure about that.

what would you recommend how i write my resume?

whatever you do don't be modest

OP are you in college? some colleges have a place where you can have a career advisor look over your resume (or help you make one) and give you pointers and stuff

was accepted but haven't registered yet. plan to start spring semester.

what kind of jobs are you applying for

low scale retail jobs don't require a resume

If you're going at everything with the bare minimum required effort, you're not going to get anywhere but a permanent lot in disappointment lane

doesn't explain why i constantly get ignored by every retail store around me.

by "require," I also mean that it's unnecessary. if you have no experience and you're applying at, like, walmart, then there's no point in making a resume.

i figured at least it'll help. i've been applying literally everywhere i can think of but there's always someone that's more qualified than me.

theres always a point

dont include irrelevant stuff to the job, and if you have any personal comments or statements you like to make (aka, experience you have but cant really put as a bulletpoint), iirc you usually put that in a cover letter

that being said its not really required. you should look for postings in local stores asking for help, and inquire at the register or something. better than sending in stuff anonymously

All they do is hand me an application, take it, and that’s the last I hear of it. I even call to check back on it but the manager just says “I’ll check it out”

I've worked a variety of jobs, from retail to industrial, even agriculture. Look at the type of job you're applying for. If it's retail, cashiering, stocking, and general customer assistance is what you're going to get.
Experience isn't required as its a starter job for pretty much anyone. Write down honestly what you know how to do, what your expertise lies in, but always include you're willing to learn more. A resume isn't required either for such a low-end job. A resume is a detailed job application and that's it, and considering you don't have much work history, there's no point.
If you want the job, put your application in, and call back a couple days after submission. Pester the forget out of them until they give you an acceptable answer. "Hello, my name is John Doe, I'm calling about an application I recently submitted. I was hoping it was reviewed."
If an employer doesn't/does want you, get your answer. Don't assume anything until you get an absolute answer.

try not to use too many obvious resume buzzwords. they so used to seeing all that copy paste crap from 100s of people that you wont be very memorable.

bullet point lists because paragraphs are stuff for a simple resume. dont make it work to read.
