aka my job sucks thread

Most of the time theres at least 1 lousy co-worker working that day that ruins it for everybody. And I mean, doesn't do any work and talks stuff all day.

Everything has been handed to me on a silver platter, and yet...I just don't find the work endearing. Unity is a troubling engine and our platform is rubbish, and there's nowhere near enough time to just sit down and fix the damn thing. I was hired to be a programmer, yet they have me doing animation and UI work which is tedious as all hell, and products don't even feel like they're worth the effort. I get paid next to slim pickings, and while I appreciate days off, a man's gotta eat, you know?

im pretty sure only 2 people on the whole forums have jobs

I like my somewhat new job. I'm doing retail clothing and it's pretty good so far. I like the ability to roam around and talk to people instead of standing at a cash register all day

I have the easiest job in the world right now.

i work at frys (grocery store) and it's pretty alright
i used to get next to no hours but since i changed positions i get around 37 hours a week

the one thing i really don't like is jon anderson because he doesn't do his job much and i have to do whatever he doesn't do

I do research and it's great.

before i left my internship it was a pretty ok job. basic qa stuff, tedious, but paid ok and since it was at an worker's compensation insurance company, they make sure to take care of their employees with good facilities.

self employed, few projects. i wouldnt call it a "job".
its stressful budgeting expenses and preparing for taxes every day in fear of not loving up.

otherwise there is a lot of freedom, thats easy on the schedule.

years ago i had normal jobs and i hated work, mostly because i hated commuting lol. commuting made me hate driving altogether, and just getting into the drivers seat for any reason was depressing.
by time i get to work im already in a horrible mood, and repeat that stuff 5 days a week. ugh

I like my job deep fried, with a large soda and cheese on top.

im lucky and have a family that is able to support the notion "you need to focus on your study so we will fund you so you wont need a part time job"

the hardest part of my job isnt the actual job it's just the loving handicap coworkers i have to deal with.

are you still working for ubi? whats your position/pay (roughly)? what do you do? is there a lot of room for promotion?

im curious about the field because ive never met anyone thats in video game anything

are you still working for ubi?
Not any more, right now I'm working for an indie dev who produces platform apps (games connected to our platform that handles friends, newsfeeds, storefront, challenges, device notifications, data research etc) for Government, Educational and Medical clients.

whats your position/pay (roughly)?
Part-Time Software Developer at about $23k/pa. I work 3 days a week for half the salary of a full-time employee (my contract specifically stipulates that I'm only to earn half of the full rate for being part-time).

I didn't choose to be part-time; originally I started as an intern, but when they wanted me to work 5 days a week on the free, I told them I had rent to pay and so they offered me a contractor position (which paid worse for 5 days a week than I'm making now for 3 days a week). Eventually I got promoted to a salaried employee, but they only barely increased my paycheck and ultimately had to reduce me to 3 days a week because of internal financial issues.

what do you do?
I mainly work on the Unity-based front-end. When I'm not coding in new features or bug-fixing old ones with our giant script library, I'm updating or creating new menu screen prefabs or fixing games that come in from our contractors. I'm also responsible for upkeep of the platform (migrating to new Unity versions, upgrading our plugins as they get updated to ensure compatibility, keeping watch of future events to be actioned (such as Apple dropping 32-bit support on the next gen of iOS)). Sometimes I need to manage data on the database/back-end, but we have a guy who is responsible for all of the functionality of that side.

is there a lot of room for promotion?
The company has very little cash, and not much vertical head-room. Even if I get an upgraded pay grade, I would still be doing literally the same stuff and still answer to the same people. This isn't a traditional business like Ubisoft which has a proper hierarchy and every position has a unique set of responsibilities; here, the responsibilities are tied to you as an individual.

i just moved 200 miles for college so i don't have one right now :-)
