shoot, forgot to specify WHEN it crashes. blockland crashes as soon as a connection is made to the server. it just shuts off abruptly, no notifications or anything.

That's pretty weird when it crashes and it seems you have no client add-ons installed either.
Run blockland, then in your console execute this: trace(1); - then we wait for the game to crash, then post a new console log (if it's too big use pastebin/dropbox/other hosting)

so the game does launch
can you create a single player server?
can you join any server? (ie badspots)

yes
didn't test it
i've joined badspots, but i still crashed, even with the low amount of add-ons.

tested it, i started a singleplayer custom server with everything that can be disabled, disabled. it loaded as you'd expect, but shortly after i got the welcome message it crashed.
it might have something to do with this computer being incredibly sensitive to add-ons?????

k, i used trace(1);

Either you have a very bad internet connection, or:
-
Try deleting cache.db in the Blockland folder
-
If that doesn't work, backup your current Blockland and try a fresh install (I recommend BL portable actually, since you can run it from whatever folder you want)

using steam blockland
:L

by the way, this computer is different from the other one that i usually use, which is a macbook air.

Has it worked in the past?
What happens if you use steam to verify the BL files?
If that doesn't work, try renaming the blockland folder and reinstall
