Author Topic: why the forget is psn not free anymore?  (Read 3956 times)

i honestly didnt mind because i believe in paying to have good online experiences

then again my experience with sonys servers has been nothing but a loving struggle

Then you should also pay to create, control and maintain the servers and all the bandwidth usage associated with that. That's where your money is going.
So what's the difference between public servers on console and public servers on PC that I have to pay a fee to play the ones on console?
i'm not seeing the issue. it's not just for multiplayer. you get hella discounts and free games each month. i got six siege for $20 from ps+ discounts + many other AAA titles way cheaper.
The stuff besides multiplayer is great but multiplayer should not be grouped into the service, multiplayer should be free because I bought the game and should be able to enjoy all of it.

that's kind of a nebulous question because there are multiple ways to create public online multiplayer. a lot of the games i can think of on PC that have free multiplayer have servers hosted by users, others are funded via subscriptions or via in-game purchases

if sony is providing servers and matchmaking for games using PSN then it makes sense that you would be charged by sony to have access to those services. there are apparently some games that don't actually require PS+ to play online as well http://gamefans.com/2016/11/28/games-you-can-play-without-ps-plus/

mcjob might have a more informed answer on this tho

I'm talking public servers, the kind you get that are 100% guaranteed vanilla because they aren't hosted on someone's private server box

off topic, that article says this about WoT and I find it hilarious: "World of War Tanks is where it’s at if you want to feel like you’re accurately simulating armored vehicle combat."

you can't monopolize online gaming on pc because literally anyone can make and sell games through a huge number of services availible. let's say steam took the Sony route and charged a steam+ fee for online gaming, no one would buy steam games anymore and would just go through GOG or some other service. xbox set the precedent for charging for online gaming and other consoles followed because otherwise they'd be deliberately putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage

It's for ransom money when Lizard Squad or some stuff decides to arbitrarily take down your $60 service.

2. it's cheaper

For how stuff nintendo's servers are it better be

3. it comes with ports of NES games with online added (i think the online services for the other two do this same sort of thing except they just give you games nobody's really buying otherwise or something? maybe they give you a discount? IDK I loving hate microsoft with the fury of a thousand suns so I don't really keep up with how online stuff for the XBox works and I don't have anything I want to play online on the PS4 so I don't keep up with that either)

The games deal you get with Xbox Live Gold are better in every way. Not only do you get good newer games like Halo 3 and Reach, and even stuff like Outlast, but you also can get multiple games a month AND you get to keep them after your gold runs out.

Wait you get to keep the games with gold even after your subscription ends? You don't with the PS Plus games.

That sucks. But yeah you get to keep your gold games. You can't play them offline but I have silver right now and can play fallout 3 fine which I never bought.

It makes them money and people willingly pay for it. If anything from a business perspective there's absolutely no reason for it to be free.

Nintendo's servers are typically used for matchmaking only with the actual gameplay being P2P (Peer-to-peer). Anyway the bigger problem lies in with the lack of voice chat, text chat, invites, parties, etc. Embarrassingly basic stuff that even the original Xbox in 2002 had.

This is why I'm not a console peasant.

pretty sure with the "ps now" package you do, which is the equivalent of the xbox gold. i could be wrong tho. i know ps plus only gives you access to a number of lower tier games

actually now that I think about it, would this be related to net neutrality whatsoever

just a theory here.

no, it's not, cus they aren't an ISP throttling/prioritizing/blocking traffic, they're just charging you for an internet service

Only with Xbox 360 games. You lose Xbox One ones.
On the topic of paid multiplayer, it definitely should be free, PSN's servers are still garbage and with how Sony increases the price every year, it's definitely not worth paying for the service (also most free games are garbage, tho xbox usually gives away good ones).
