Author Topic: AT&T acts like I owe them over $400  (Read 1654 times)

So I went on a cruise to Alaska in the beginning of August for 10 days. It was a cruise, which had an extremely expensive off-wifi data charge. $2.00 for 8MB of data, so I said forget that and turned off my data usage COMPLETELY on my iPhone 5. I turned off roaming, and 3G/4G usage all together. Even powered off my phone. Once I anchored in Alaska, I switched off my data for a few mins (probably like 7 minutes) just to check my mail and texts. I was connected to one of Alaska's AT&T towers so I knew it wouldn't charge such a ridiculous fee but I knew I still didn't want to use data so I turned it off again. I haven't touched my phone until I landed back at my house.

Few weeks later, the phone bill arrives and tells them I owe over $400 for data usage. I was like what the forget and called them and they TOLD ME that I was on my phone every night past midnight for half an hour. First of all, that makes NO loving sense.
I HAVE NOT TURNED ON MY PHONE DURING THE ENTIRE CRUISE, BESIDES THE 7 MINUTES TO CHECK MAIL/TEXTS WHILE I WAS ON SHORE IN ALASKA.
I HAD NO OTHER PEOPLE STAYING IN MY BUNK OR KNOW THE PASSWORD TO MY PHONE.
EVEN IF I WAS ON DATA, THERE WAS NO WAY TO CONNECT BECAUSE THERE IS NO SERVICE IN THE MIDDLE OF A GIANT 13 STORY loving CRUISE SHIP.

I'm seriously pissed. I'm trying super hard to save money for college with the only bill I have to pay is car insurance. Now they want me to cough up money for something I clearly didn't do. My parents don't believe me when I say I wasn't on it and theres literally nothing I can do besides paying something so handicapped.

who were you calling past midnight every night for half an hour

you could say "kiss my ass" and not pay it and forget up your credit

the easiest way to avoid this in the future is airplane mode + wifi enabled, and disable airplane mode only when you need data.

the fact you got charged is pretty bs but there's really not much you can do other than pay it and switch plans when your contract runs out (assuming you get the feeling this will happen again)

There's always the possibility it's just a mistake on their end. But definitely disupute it further if you're not BSing us

threaten to switch providers

honestly if you really really don't want to pay it, you could take it to small claims court. although it'll cost more probably

is your name on the bill?

i feel like theres something you're missing/not telling us

Thats why you don't use AT&T or Apple because they suck

Call them up, explain the situation; and if they are persistent that you owe them money, tell them your are going to switch to an android device/verizon and they can shove it. Threaten to change services, and let them know you will be telling all your friends about how their company screws people over. Might giv em a change of heart....? its worth a shot

If you ask me, the whole "pay for data" thing is a sham anyways. You already pay a phone bill, why should you have a data cap? It's not like they store every loving youtube video you watch, and every facebook post you scroll through onto their servers, and if they did that would just be wrong

Honestly phone companies are always looking for cash. I have Virgin Mobile and they are alright, but 4gb of data a month for $35, or you can do $45 for unlimited.
But anyways tell those forgeters to go find something better to do than rip off their customers and threaten to switch providers.

small claims doesn't cost much money because you don't need to hire a lawyer. that's kinda the whole point
