Author Topic: Why are seat belt laws a thing?  (Read 3249 times)

Because some people don't wish death to people they believe inferior.

How does the seatbelt law work if you are in car from a year before seatbelts were required in them? As far as I know your car only has to comply to safety requirements of when it was made.
correct cars only have to meet federal law at the time of their manufacture

that is correct, although you can install aftermarket seatbelts if you so choose

go 120mph in icy conditions and find out for yourself. also disable your airbag for maximum effect

i know some people who purposely don't wear it because they want to "stick it to the man"
personally i call that just being a dumbass

Helmets are required by law for motorcycles yet I've arrived in situations where the rider had its helmet on its elbow (or didn't have one at all) and the skull was cracked open like a walnut.

I've had two situations with no-helmet accidents:
Juan B Justo and Corrientes: skull cracked clean, the biker must've died on impact.
Ugarteche between Cabello and Av. Gral. Las Heras: the biker hit his head on the asphalt and blood was pouring out like water on a hose. This guy survived with mental disabilities.

Laws are there for a reason guys. Paramedics get used to these situations but you could avoid them all together by following saftey rules.

i used to like driving w/o a seat belt and i was the type to drive with one hand on the top of the wheel

but after autox and drifting i don't feel comfortable unless the seat belt is on and both hands are between 8-10 and 2-4

also it's legal for bikers to wear no helmets in michigan

Why do i need to give partial ownership of my vehicle to the government in order to drive it
Why does my car need a vin
Why cant i import an old bmw for emissions purposes but redneck rick can burn coal in his 5.0 dodge 6900 full size cab that weighs 6000lbs
a lot of whys out there isnt there

i'm fine with seatbelt laws, i just wish i didn't have to pay a fat vehicle tax every year in order to keep my car in NC :(

Premature death is actually a significant drain on the economy.  Raising a person to a productive age consumes a huge amount of resources and you're expected to at least attempt to pay that back (or forward into your own children) before you start consuming resources again in your old age.

because accidents cause disruptions in traffic and in turn, losing money
if death caused someone to disappear suddenly (with their car), there would be no laws regarding stupid things

because it saves the state money as well.
your accidents arnt just your expense.

So you can stay alive to keep paying taxes.

I drive around an old 65' Mustang and the seat belts in it are the old "Self Delete belts" as they are called. Meaning they only go across your lap.

I get pulled over all the time because most police officers don't understand that most classic cars don't have cross shoulder belts haha.
