a few days ago, russia used a nerve agent against a spy on british soil, sending him to the hospital but not killing him. the UK demanded russia to answer for this, which they responded with by poisoning another spy.

the UK called for a UN meeting about it, with representatives from the US, france, and germany sharing in their convictions against russia. sanctions and denunciations have been applied, as britain looks to lead the defense against russian interference in the west.

this is why you dont assassinate someone on foreign soil

unfortunately i cant think of a way for these nations to punish russia over this. its clear russia doesnt give a forget atm about the views of us/uk and actually seems to prefer being viewed negatively, as long as it doesnt face serious permanent repercussions. they seem perfectly content drumming up conflict, whether its between them and others, or just between others.

it seems like this will just blow over like the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko and nobody will really care after a few years

Maybe...
but the current international tensions between Europe, the US and Russia are quite a bit more intense today than they were in 2006.
