You've narrowed my point to economic destabilization which is not specifically what I meant

It's a bit naive to think that the US could completely embargo oil imports from Russia without either domestic or global trade repercussions. If the US is importing oil from Russia, it's obviously because there's demand for it. They're not going to shut off that tap overnight, and if they did it would cause some major pain to the US economy (it's not going to happen).

If anything you would just see more of the same sort of economic sanctions that target the ability of the oil companies to raise equity, or asset freezes on the russian CEOs/oligarchs. I think you're also ignoring the strength of the Russia-China relationship which is another reason an embargo would never happen. A full embargo would risk sparking an actual trade war with China.

Its not like russia sells fossile fuels for like the entirety of Europe
