Author Topic: why is gold valuable?  (Read 3484 times)

why is gold a valuable material? its just really shiny...

why is gold considered valuable and precious and not something else

the thought occured to me when i questioned the value of gold

It turns out then, that the reason gold is precious is precisely that it is so chemically uninteresting.

Gold's relative inertness means you can create an elaborate golden jaguar and be confident that 1,000 years later it can be found in a museum display case in central London, still in pristine condition.

So what does this process of elemental elimination tell us about what makes a good currency?

First off, it doesn't have to have any intrinsic value. A currency only has value because we, as a society, decide that it does.

As we've seen, it also needs to be stable, portable and non-toxic. And it needs to be fairly rare - you might be surprised just how little gold there is in the world

In the modern day it's obviously useful for its conductive properties

In terms of why it was traditionally considered valuable, I would imagine it's because it's (obviously) alluring, and very malleable - which makes it great for decorations/arts/jewelry.

>rare
>doesnt corrode (well it does but only with specific elements)
>very conductive

how is it not valuable?

Gold is one of like, 3 colored metals. The other stable one is copper. It's also such a boring metal that it's basically invincible to chemical reactions, so kind often wore it because it's kind of like the non stick cooking stuff you keep in the back of your fridge. No real use for it because other kinds of metals are stronger and won't break as easily, but hey it keeps your stuff shiny

take a look at the extra credits series on the history of money. pretty interesting

it boils down to 1) rare 2) hard to forge/fake (inert metal, special distinct properties like malleability) and 3) shiny

2) hard to forge/fake (inert metal, special distinct properties like malleability)

tell that to mister perfect fools gold
