Building Tips n Tricks v36

35 threads about building later, and I feel as if the community still hasn't gone over everything. Like, using the tips I've compiled down below, I was able to make a decent build but not something spectacularly good.
The List:
  • Be effective in brick use. Don’t spam unless detail calls for it
  • A build can always be improved. So, improve it.
  • Have patience.
  • Save often.
  • Use references.
  • Plan your base, walls, windows, and doors.
  • Don’t make your build a square.
  • Use color schemes.
  • Let your imagination flow.
  • Don’t be afraid of new ideas.
  • Ramps and round bricks should be used for extra detail.
  • Detail is key.
  • Symmetry usually isn’t a good idea.
  • Lego builds/sets can be used as inspiration.
  • Utilize odd bricks in clever ways.
  • Layer your walls for extra detail, and different colors on the interior and exterior.
  • Stick with a theme and/or style for your build.
  • Don’t focus on getting your build done. Focus on building it.
  • Post your best build in gallery and use the constructive criticism given.
  • Take up as much space as you need, but be sure not to leave empty space.
  • Make sure each addition to the build makes sense.
  • Steal from others builds. Even if it feels dirty, you’re learning how their builds work.
  • If applicable, use the golden rectangle.
  • Don't stop building something because you think it will look bad when it’s done.
  • If you need something to practice on, recreate real-life things from radios to skyscrapers.
  • Rules can be broken. Such as color scheme and symmetry.
  • Expanding off the last tip, know why the rule is there to know when to break it

Give us your own tips that aren't featured in the list so far. I know there's more to it than those tips right up there. And, if you're struggling with building, why not take some pointers from those tips or any other tips in the thread? (thanks to conan and magus, as well as many other forumers for the tips)

If you're going to do a laid brick style like that, then you should conserve bricks by using larger plates between.
