then literally everybody in the world is an artist. everyone is also a musician.

Are you trying to bait right now?

The only thing that is required to be an artist is to make art. I drew a happy face when i was 2 years old, therefore i am an artist. I made art, therefore i am officially an artist. This is in tune with your logic, so don't come at me all of the sudden

this is really sad

this is really sad
the only thing that qualifies someone as an artist is if they made art.
i agree. you can thank ikethegeneric for his incredibly sad blanket statement

Okay so you're degenerating to your usual self. Good to know!

i thought it was obvious that path/phantos/thegoodperry makes stuffty bait/troll posts 95% of the time

It's painfully obvious that your interpretation of art is entirely subjective. Therefore, there is no arbitrary threshold for what constitutes someone as an artist. You can either say:

If you make art you are an artist - this statement means that everyone is an artist. saying someone is not an artist means you are officially applying your subjective opinion to judge their art. anything can be art, so clearly there's no clear definition for anything that 'is' art and 'isn't' art

or

If you make art professionally you are an artist - this statement is clear and quantifiable. if you make any sum of money off of your art, you are an artist. Your art can be subjectively awesome or subjectively terrible, but as long as someone buys it, you're doing it professionally, and could be considered an artist.

The latter statement is possible to quantify and qualify. The former isn't.

Why am i to blame? It was ikethegeneric that made such an open and vague statement, suddenly i'm a troll simply because i attempted to make sense of it?

On the off chance you're just an idiot - You have no stake in gatekeeping the art community, so trying to talk from a matter-of-fact tone comes off as disingenuous. Nobody within their right mind wants to disambiguate the term "Artist" from people who don't create art in a professional climate because that would be completely insane.

If you don't like that, you're going to have to live your life not liking it. Nobody gives enough of a stuff to debate this with you because this is a useless argument that means nothing. You can't just choose to redefine a title because it doesn't fit what you think unless you have a good enough reason to, and guess what? You don't.

Don't throw stones from a glass house, Nix

jokes on you i dont have an art style :sunglasses:

"its my art style"

i'll do you one better, this is abstract

I'm not gatekeeping the art community. If i was i'd probably be defining what kind of stuff counts as art and what isn't. I'm not a critic, i believe everyone can practice art in whatever form they want to, whether they want to be lazy or pour their heart and soul into it. Everyone interprets it differently, so its not my place to judge.

I am also not redefining the word 'Artist.' I am simply expressing the most qualifiable, solid definition that wikipedia lists:

Quote
A person who creates art.
A person who makes and creates art as an occupation.
A person who is skilled at some activity.
A person whose trade or profession requires a knowledge of design, drawing, painting, etc.

Obviously if you want to define Artist as the first definition, then go ahead. But if you do that then you are forced to acknowledge that everyone is an artist, because everyone creates art in some form. The third definition is just as vague, since skill is subjective. Definition 2 and 4 have some qualifiable attributes, therefore it is easier to define people as either being someone who does art as an occupation, or someone who doesn't.

It's that simple. If you consider yourself an artist, go ahead. You can also consider yourself the greatest being in the universe, the hottest person in the universe, or any other entirely subjective unquantifiable label. Or you can be direct and clear with people and say 'i do art as a hobby' which makes it clear that you practice it on your own time and are not paid.
