Work ethic also doesn’t have to come from the field you work in either. That “hobbyist” artist might be the most diligent worker from experience in their 9-5. Theres also self-discipline, which I would highly covet in an artist.
People who lack skill in a professional setting are usually fired. People who lack professionalism in a professional setting are also fired. If i were to choose a freelance artist who worked for Disney for the last 10 years its most likely that they'll be both skilled and professional, considering they weren't fired. If not, its a sign that Disney sucks at screening their employees.
The only time i've ever been burned by a paid service is when i chose someone who wasn't as qualified to save money.
I could bring up multiple examples of people who bought into luthiers, expecting great work because their previous portfolio showed that they would be a great candidate, only to have work done atrociously, or just not done at all (stealing thousands and thousands of dollars). Meanwhile, there are “hobbyist” luthiers doing work better than even seasoned craftsmen.
