Author Topic: So what's the point in putting rules and war crimes in war?  (Read 4393 times)

A country is going to war with another country.

Soldiers will be killing other soldiers on the battlefield so what's the point of rules.

Shouldn't war be without rules?

It's just weird to me that these people are going to sit around and ban specific weapons even though they are effective at what they do.

Who's going to try you for this war crimes when you become the winner anyways?

I've always found it amusing and ironic that some men sat down and said "We needs rules to govern killing each other, we can't be running around killing each other like savages."

also, we should nuke the brown people.

in reality, the reason there's a law of war is to remove unnecessary suffering. poison gases, napalm, nuclear attacks, they all cause unnecessary suffering. no side wants wounded soldiers returning home with wounds that will cause them grief and misery throughout their lives.

ADDENDUM: before you ask why don't terrorists follow the laws of war, that's because they're TERRORISTS. they use any method available to cause terror and dissent.

basic human rights, and imagine if america, let's say, mutilated their enemies. a lot of countries would see us as a disgusting, uncivil country, and would not want to associate/ally with us. there are people like CIA ofc that dont give a forget but that's partially why everyone hates them.

Tell that to the thousands of homeless vets in america.

compare that to the tens of thousands in a major war considered like ww2. look at history first.

another point to consider as to why there's a law of war, is to deescalate tensions before they turn to conflict. that's how we've had success with nuclear disarmament and regulation.

a nuke may win the war but anything you win will be a scorched wasteland of bodies that will be radioactive for the next 3 years and no one will want anything to do with you
why not set rules so this doesn't happen

War shouldn't cause any more suffering than it already does

forget you lol that’s why

so that their forces only kill who they're supposed to, i.e. the opposing forces.  things like biological, chemical and nuclear warfare are effective, yes, but they destroy everything else, not just their military presence, and we generally don't want that

Essentially, to stop people other than the military from getting hurt. As for how these laws actually get into effect, the countries NOT taken over will generally not do any teamwork stuff with the unlawful country (IE no trading, no allying)

It doesn't just ban weapons though, one rule is that you cannot attack medical stations of the opposing force (No blowing up hospitals, for example). Another rule is that you cannot "fake" medical stations while using them for military purposes (IE no ambushing the enemy with these as your cover).

for war crimes= no reason to kill civilians or unarmed soldiers, no?
for rules in general= no reason to use painful gas on the enemy, no???

a good brown townogy: why make it against the law to drink and drive? why spend millions of dollars to try and educate kids in the risks of drunk driving? if drunk driving accidents are inevitable, why even try preventing them?

just because there will always be drinking related accidents doesn't mean people should give up all together. the point of drinking programs and extensive laws is to reduce the amount of drunk driving accidents; not to eradicate them.

just because war and war crimes is inevitable, doesn't mean you can't make an effort to reduce casualties, enforce and police armies, and attempt to keep everyone at a standard.
