Discord is insanely popular right now, so of course those features would sooner be associated with it than what pioneered those features

well when discord came out that was the general idea. Once they started aggressively advertising to gamers that's when the shift to discord really took place

Start Steam with -nofriendsui

This only fixes the friends window, and it only works from the shortcut that has -nofriendsui at the end of the directory.

Yeah, but I believe they show in-game friends over tagged friends.

I dont think you understand how UI changes can mess with people.
Some people rely on orientation and layout.
