Help me understand portal

Now we're thinking with portals!

it wouldn't be any different than getting crushed between two solid objects. you wouldn't 'be squished into an infinitely 2d shape'... you'd just end up spurting out through the sides like tomato paste

big brain

can i suck your toes btw

Portals can't exist on moving objects, the particles would dissipate and the hole disappears, you would just get crushed between the two walls

aren't all objects moving though or is this restriction only for the portals relative to each other?

@freq: portals relative to each other

imagine trusting anything a cake would say

Some portals in portal 2 are capable of moving

Well yeah but the question is "what happens when two portals close together with something in between". For the sake of the argument we're assuming the object has nowhere to go outside the bounds of the portals because it wouldn't make the question interesting otherwise.

this is basically a portal on a really large scale. the distance between the portals is brown townogous to the distance between upper universe and lower universe. as the portals get closer and closer this shape becomes squashed and eventually you'd be left with the two spaces (lower and upper universe) being the same and a neat portal-shaped hole being forever lost in spacetime. whatever is inside those two portals would either not exist or would now exist outside space and time

now that's thinking with portals

And that's when you would find yourself in the backrooms, right?

portals can't exist on moving objects

ot: the op's situation would be you crush yourself

think about it this way. if your arm is sticking out through the portal, it can collide with yourself. as the portals come closer, your arm is forced into your body

you could avoid getting crushed initially by making sure your appendages stick out through the portal at angles so they dont collide with your body, but eventually the distance gets so small that part of your torso/arm/whatever will stick through one portal and come out the other end, crushing itself in the process. you will be turned into a pulp.

in reference to this one: the moving wall holding the orange portal will stick out of itself as it enters the blue portal, and collide with the edge of the blue portal the farther it goes in. at the part where the lower portion of the wall sticks out, where the portal intersect, will be a fractal of sorts where the half of the piece of the wall/portal that goes through the blue portal will repeat this process, resulting in a corner of the wall downscaling itself to infinity. the farther it goes in, the larger this fractal becomes, and the maximum distance you can push the portal in (before things start collapsing in on itself) is half the orange portal in the blue one.

...did you draw this with an etch-a-sketch?
