best file recovery software?

What's the best free recovery software? Recuva turned 500gb into corrupted 23,000gb and imyfone turned my data hostage if I don't pay 50 dollars for it. I wasted 10 hours total on this stuff.

Forgot what it was called but it cost money. Recovered the file I wanted, when recurva could not. Will post later if I can find name.

I've only had luck with recuva. Maybe you used it wrong?

recuva is the only one i have any real familiarity with, there are also tools like photorec but your mileage may vary
