I was playing XCOM 40k and trying to see if I can win without using more than 100 marines in total, not counting Scouts or other auxiliaries like Guardsmen. It started getting a little annoying keeping track of who earned the distinction of their power armor, so I decided to start naming my guys after forumites. So now we're here, harkening to the old XCOM threads.

I will post your stories of triumph and tragedy. Already, we are five, almost six months into the purge of this planet. We've shut down chaos cults, exterminated genestealers, and most recently did battle against the perfidious Aeldari and immobilized an Ork Caravan.

Now I call on you, Blockland Forums! Give me your names, and your preferred battle roles (Tactical - Rifles & Adaptability, Devastator - Heavy Weapons, Assault - Close Combat) and I will throw your avatar into the meat grinder. The roster so far is just from names that came up off the top of my head. (Any other names are scouts or auxiliaries.)

Below is the world that we are saving. Far to the left is Paragon, our research/interception base. In the center is our main HQ, Jangwa. In the north is our training camp, Baraaf. It has no capabilities besides storage and training capacity of 100 soldiers.

In the upper right, is a Genestealer Cult base, and above that is the aforementioned immobilized Ork caravan. That caravan will be our target. The Genestealer cult base can wait for me to have enough expendable guardsmen to throw at it because forget genestealers. There will be minimal savescumming, mostly due to bullstuff corruption from genestealers, slaanesh and nurgle weapons. And the use of rockets and grenades. I'll take ANY result other than having my own explosives blow up at my feet.

Our sortie for this mission:

The drop pods give us cover for the first turn of the mission, halting any reaction fire shenanigans. Unfortunately, anyone that isn't a space marine or a servitor will take damage from the landing. Fortunately, this includes enemies that decide to stand right next to the drop pods!

Wait a minute, these aren't orks! The ROSIGMA interception icon lied to me! Oh well, genestealer cultists (in their transports) are much easier to deal with.

The mission went well, with zero casualties. Brickitect stepped out of the drop pod laying down hate with his heavy bolter, while Lord Tony sprinted around the side of the truck and burned a pair of cultists with his Flamer. Dr. Block and Lady Sevacre picked off some of the survivors. But while distracted with what was in front of him, a sneaky cultist tagged Brickitect in the back with a Plasma Pistol. Thankfully, he survived. Conan also got hit in the face by a Krak Grenade, but it's nothing that some cosmetic surgery (and three weeks in the apothecary) won't fix.

My main bottleneck right now is acquiring enough Adamantium to create more armor. Whenever a marine wearing power armor dies, the armor is destroyed with him. Buying more will require me to make a fourth base and set it up as a trading outpost, but buying it is expensive. My other plan was to make an Adamantium Forge in the Paragon base, but the facility costs $3,000,000 which is money that I just do not have right now. The mission I just did netted me $349,000. So I've got quite a bit of work ahead of me.

I shot down a Large chaos ship. Thankfully, it seems to be piloted by Undivided cultists, so I only have to deal with guns instead of magic.

I'm putting Lord Tony's flaming to good use. He lit up the entrance hall of the ship, killing 2. Then a daemon came down and cut him up, but he had enough strength to kill it with fire. A servitor is standing by to heal his twelve fatal wounds. Ladios is preparing to breach the interior of the ship.

Meanwhile, Masterlegodude is on top of the ship. A heretic was revealed as an alpha legion infiltrator and disappeared in the smoke. So he threw a phosphor grenade, giving everyone else a flaming target to shoot at.

All in all, a pretty smooth operation save for Mr.Nobody getting shot by a graviton gun and Tony getting shanked.

Some time has passed, and we are now in mid-june. It's been mostly uneventful, save for shooting down a ship full of tzeentch cultists. I didn't grab any screenshots, but our only casualty was Mr. Queeba who I had been grooming to be an assault marine because of his high melee skill. He sprinted towards the entrance of the ship with supporting fire from his team keeping the enemy's heads down. Unfortunately when he made it inside, he came face to face with a vile sorcerer whose flickering flames melted through his power armor as well as the floor of the ship. Night Fox heroically punched the sorcerer in the face and pulled Mr Queeba out of the fire, bringing him to the Apothecary, Dr. Block. But try as he might, Dr. Block was unable to fully cleanse the corruption before it took over Queeba, and he was forced to grant him The Emperor's Mercy (shooting him in the face with a bolt pistol before he causes problems).

In this episode, we look to the north. The genestealer cult that we haven't dealt with yet has metastasized, creating a new cell that we have to deal with.

Deploying to this mission will be our most expendable troops, because I do NOT want to lose more marines to genestealer ambushes. In our Razorback Transport, we have 3 scout marines, 6 Storm Troopers, as well as Night Fox and Greek2Me, a pair of Tactical Marines.

We arrive at the purported location of the cult. A stinking lair hidden within the sewage networks of the nearby hive city. Already, we are beset by xeno cultists wearing the armor of enforcers and law-bringers.

Worse than the xenos in carapace armor is the presence of civilians. The xenos make sport of hunting them during our battle, but these too present a threat to our operation. Left unchecked, they will pilfer our Razorback of any weapons to 'defend themselves.' But also, they can be tainted by the genestealers, revealing themselves as predatory monsters when they have already broken our lines. We will leave them be for the moment, so that they can draw fire away from our troops.

A genestealer! It makes use of its preternatural, lightning-fast reflexes to DODGE the reaction fire from Greek2Me and his supporting units. He's tagged and slowed down, and eventually shot to death by a storm trooper, but not before skewering one and injecting him full of corruptive eggs. Now the medic has to deal with this quickly, or else he will give rise to another xeno monstrosity!

The next turn, that trooper is saved while another is slain on the other side of the tank. Greek2Me and Night Fox's squads both have the unsavory task of clearing out the habitation-blocks, room to room. As Night Fox opens his door, it reveals a grisly sight of several civilians left bleeding to death at the stairs. There's no time to stop and care for them, not while their killer is still nearby.

After clearing the buildings, Greek2Me, Night Fox and their squads close in on the last pocket of resistance. A few brood brothers rallying around a stolen Arbites Motorcycle. Greek and Fox both spring out of cover, spraying the motorcycle with bolts. Night Fox gets a few wounds to his chest in return, but the attack is successful and the cult is destroyed. The only casualty was a storm trooper.

It is now July, with that cult (and another offcamera) dealt with, our first operation is against a landed Medium ship. It was able to out-gun and out-run our Stormhawk Interceptors. Thankfully, it stuck around long enough for our better-gunned and more secure Razorback Tanks to catch up with it.

The Razorback arrives. The Marines inside wait with anticipation to meet their foe. What new hell has been spewed by the warp storm overhead? With a metallic whine, the doors open and crash into the ground. The cobalt blue of a familiar foe greets our men. Rubric Marines! The accursed of Tzeentch! This will be a hard battle indeed.

The Twin Heavy Bolters of the Razorbacks open up, ripping holes into the foe. But they are not made of flesh in blood, merely dust animating empty suits of armor, so our weapons aren't as effective. The turrets draw some of their return fire, but not all of it as Soukuw finds out. He's the first to step out of the tank, and is torn to shreds by a Reaper Autocannon. Even Dr. Block can't save him, his very essence incinerated by the gun's sorcerous ammunition. His brothers will avenge him, and then take positions outside of the ship's door.

An old man in a robe steps out of the ship. He gets turned into paste by the marines waiting outside. Brickitect takes a plasma shot to the face, but Dr. Block is able to stabilize him while Lady Sevacre and her orbiters squad advance to find them. Flatflyer takes the initiative to breach the ship but finds no enemies, while Mr. Nobody circles around the side and blasts someone with his Lascannon.

"For Netanyahu! The God Emperor!" Ladios yells defiantly, as he shields himself from another burst of plasma fire. Conan is able to follow the burning trail left by the weapon to its source, a cultist in infiltrator gear. Without a word, he levels his heavy bolter and pulls the trigger. The cacti of the desert are poor cover against .980 caliber explosive bolts, and she bites the dust. The ship is recovered, and Soukuw is memorialized for his service.

A Spacehulk has appeared out of the Warp Storm above our planet, and it broke into pieces as soon as it arrived. Now those pieces are raining across the world, and we have to deal with the inhabitants. One such hunk of hulk landed just north of our base, and so we deploy to deal with it. Now, these are usually crawling with genestealers. And while I'd rather deal with this with minimal marines like I do their bases, I'm forced to bring out my heavy hitters because I only get one shot at this.

Upon landing, we're assaulted not just by brainwashed humans and genestealers, but full-blown Tyranids! A pair of hormagaunts wave their piddly bio-guns at my men before they get punched in the face. As they disembark and form up, Lady Sevacre gets jumped by a Purestrain and corrupted. But thanks to the quick work of Flatflyer who transported her, and Goth77 and Dr. Block who pumped her full of drugs, she survived the ordeal! Now two fireteams, one led by Lord Tony and the other by Masterlegodude, prepare to make entry into the structure.

Masterlegodude's squad is the first to reach the elevator to the next section, with Lord Tony's squad lagging behind. This part of the spacehulk was mostly uneventful, and we got through with no deaths. Lord Tony will have a few more scars from his close encounter with a Hormigaunt, though.

The mission objective is clear. We must destroy the space hulk. In the first half, Conan killed a genestealer with an impressively heavy gun. He's decided that he will use it himself for the remainder of the mission.

It's dark and cramped down here, perfect place for an ambush...

Passing through a narrow passage, Dr. Block and Master Matthew are attacked by a trio of cultists, one of which wields a dangerous Plasma Pistol. But with a few well-placed shots, they were able to fight past them.

After which they found the control center and destroyed it. The whole mission netted us a very nice 5.5M requisition points. Time to get some better equipment!

bump, don't want the topic to get too old. probably keep playing tomorrow or something

holy moly an actual forum-style lets play, i love these, keep going!

Lady Sevacre scrolled through the tactical display in front of her as her Razorback rumbled down the hillside. She spoke over the Vox to the other marines being deployed, "First we fought with Chaos, and put down some traitors and deserters which was to be expected. Then we met Genestealers, which came as a surprise. But Aeldari and Orks? There's even been some rumblings of a Necron presence on the world. This is reminding me of that Kaurava incident involving the Blood Ravens, and I'm not too happy about it."

She switched to viewing the virtual display from the Razorback's forward cameras and saw the ramshackle ork fortress looming in the distance. "This is it, Brothers. Check your wargear once more. Battle awaits! Primarch-Progenitor, to your glory and the glory of Him on earth!"

"For the Primarch!" Her battle brothers shouted in unison. Despite her... peculiarities, the Imperial Fists regarded her as a battle brother all the same. Battle Brother, Sergeant Lady Sevacre. The moniker of "Brother Lady Savacre" was a bit of a joke, with some joking that she grew a snake or was grafted with one as a neophyte. But she truly was a woman, proof that the acceptance rate of the Gene-Seed for females was not 0%, merely close to it. It was a minor secret of the chapter, with her brothers referring to her simply as "Brother Sevacre" in public and in documents to avoid scrutiny by the Ordo Astartes or their cousins in other chapters. For this matter alone she was exceptional, the result of a chief of Inwit with major clout and renown pushing his daughter into the care of the Imperial Fists. Rather than deal with political squabbles, they took her in and put her through the trials, all of which she survived without handicaps. That was a century ago. Now, she faithfully serves her Primarch in the battle-line.

(lore chuds don't murder me I just wanted to try my hand at writing this since I already included her in the game)

The mission began as it usually did, with the Razorbacks opening up with their Twin-Linked Heavy Bolters knocking Ork Deffkoptas out of the sky, while the marines jumped out of the back to lay down suppressive fire.

What wasn't so usual was just how armored these orks were! The Marines deployed with Fragstorm munitions loaded, intending on making mincemeat of exposed flesh. The marines had already disembarked under fire from the tanks, whose turrets were quickly being destroyed, and now had to waste precious seconds loading Kraken bolts instead.

Sergeant Sevacre, Ladios and Lord Tony ran to the forktress proper to prepare to breach, while the others lingered by the garage, contending with the Meganob there before they can provide supporting fire with Heavy Bolters and Lascannons.

Disaster struck at the Garage! While fending off not one, but TWO Meganobs with power klaws, Conan was shot in the back and killed by a third! Brickitect cuts down the closest one with his Heavy Bolter, while Night Fox runs to the side and uses his frag rounds to overload the forcefield of the second, buying an opportunity for Mr.Nobody to punch a hole in him with his Lascannon. The third Meganob was rinsed by the one remaining Razorback turret, but he's still up and looks angrier than before.

Meanwhile, Sevacre's fireteam is met by a Killa Kan ambling clumsily out of the main gate. Their Kraken Penetrator rounds are able to punch holes in the mechanical idol's armor, but it still stands. Lord Tony set it ablaze hoping to smoke the grot pilot out, and ducked around the corner to avoid return fire.

Unfortunately for them, they're not faring much better. What initially appeared as a flamer on the Killa Kan could also be used as a crude plasma cutter. The Kan burned its way through Sevacre's armor, knocking her unconcious. Ladios was able to finish the Kan off while Lord Tony whisked her away to safety so Goth77 could treat her. This left Ladios alone at the front gate, but he's holding his own admirably.

Konditions continue to deteriorate around the gate. Ladios was forced to pull back around the korner after three more Meganobs walked out of the fortress. The Garage is fully secure now, so while Mr.Nobody sets up a firing position on the roof, Night Fox ran over to reinforce Ladios, and Lord Tony went into some nearby trees to bait the Meganobs into shooting him with their inaccurate guns rather than using their fearsome klaws to kripple my marines. But with a massive THUD, a fourth Meganob jumped from the fortress walls to confront the two marines directly! Thankfully, with some supporting fire from Masterlegodude and Mr.Nobody, they were able to bring the beast down.

Earning a moment of respite, our forces regroup under the cover of the ramparts. Mr. Nobody remains near the Garage, trying to find an angle to shoot at the Orkish Tank parked within the fortress and Goth77 is running low on stamina sprinting from place to place to heal people. We had a Servitor to help with the healing, but he died early on serving as a human shield for Mr.Nobody, and so the servitor's debt to humanity is repaid in full.

More Meganobz made their presence known, poking around the corner. This one was luckier and shrugged off lots of firepower, and pumping Ladios full of lead. Night Fox was able to drag his body over to the Garage for Goth77 to heal, and when he awoke he grabbed a gun from a dead ork to try and help in the fighting since he was disarmed. Strangely, it seems that the orks are using weapons pilfered from the Sororitas convent on the planet!

After Mr.Nobody snipes out the tank's turrets with his Lascannon, the Marines are finally able to breach and enter the fortress. They do so with the ork's own weapons, blasting holes into the walls from which they can enter with more cover, while a very injured Lady Sevacre gives covering fire from afar, shooting down one more Deffkopta. Masterlegodude destroys the last Killa Kan near the gate, while Night Fox and Master Matthew put down an ork mekboy each. The marines enter the fortress with care, alert to any other surprises.

Driving the last remaining Meganob from his hiding place, Lord Tony confronts him with his flamer, "[NEWS} - You're dead, greenskin."
With their death, we finally claimed the fortress for ourselves! Not only that, but we reclaimed a few pieces of imperial wargear, including 7 De'az Stormbolters, 3 Rotor Cannons, a pair of power fists, a grenade launcher and a missile launcher. Included in the haul was a chaos-tainted bolter, which thankfully means that our enemies are fighting amongst themselves. A total of 31 enemies were killed, netting us 1871 points. Conan is memorialized with 36 kills during this campaign.

After Conan's death, two fresh marines arrive as reinforcements. Nicepoint, a devastator with a penchant for snipers and other long-range precision weapons, and Bloody Jumper who, true to his name, is training to become an assault marine, which also happens to be the role with a 100% casualty rate so far. The following day, we have completed research for Assault Cannons and finished construction on a Chapter Armory, which will allow us to construct Terminator Armor within the next month or two.

all women are spiders

Lady Sevacre after having to spend another 25 days in the infirmary:

Our Stormhawk Interceptor encountered enemy fighter craft on a scouting mission. It suffered heavy damage but emerged victorious from the dogfight. Following the auspex-predicted takeoff trajectory of the planes, the pilot was able to discover a hidden base occupied by Rubric Marines and their sorcerous puppeteers. This calls for a drop pod assault, to break through their air defenses where our Razorback Tanks would be easy prey for their Lightning Fighters.

For our loadout, the Marines will be dropping in loaded with Kraken Penetrator bolts. There's no use for the Metalstorm Frag Rounds when we're combating heretic astartes. For a similar reason, Lord Tony's trusty Flamer will be replaced by a standard bolter. Tzeentchian cultists wield the power of flame, and largely ignore its effects.

Order of Battle:
Lord Tony - Bolter
Dr. Block - Bolt Pistol + Narthecium
Masterlegodude - Bolter
Bloody Jumper - Bolt Pistol + Chainsword
Master Matthew - Heavy Bolter
Log - Heavy Bolter
Mr. Nobody - Lascannon
Nicepoint - Sniper Rifle
Filipe - Attack Bike w/ Twin Heavy Bolters + Chainsword

Filipe has avoided mention until now, because he's been too busy tuning some of the vehicles in the chapter's armory. Now that we face a shortage of manpower, he rides out to battle in his personal motorcycle!

With a bang, the drop pods impact the earth, crushing a pair of cultists and a horrific daemon underneath! But already, our advance is hampered, as the creature's psychic death screams nearly petrify Lord Tony and Log, causing them to stumble out of the drop pod. Bloody Jumper takes the initiative and leaps out at a stupefied Rubric Marine and cuts him down with his chainsword. From there, the others fan out from the pods, taking fire and returning fire as they go. Mr. Nobody whiffs a Lascannon shot and is brought to his knees by an enemy's Inferno Bolter. Nicepoint takes position behind him, and pops the heretic's head off from his shoulders with his sniper rifle.

The auto-senses of their helmets help adapt them to the darkness of night, casting the tainted blue desert in a bright shade of green while still allowing clear identification of allies and enemies. (Aka, everything is green because I'm using night vision mode)

Bloody Jumper, Nicepoint and Log are attempting to gain entry into a strange ziggurat, and are facing light resistance by a few Tzaangors with lasguns. When Bloody Jumper tries to go around the side to the entrance, another Screamer blasts him with petrifying screeching, and now he's stuck out of cover and susceptible to psychic attacks.

Over to the west, Lord Tony finds a structure with an elevator leading down into the depths, but a Pink Horror was blocking the way, gibbering and laughing. The automated Storm Bolters on the drop pods cut it in half, and with a burst of magic flame it split into a pair of dour-looking Blue Horrors. They've taken some shots from Tony and Filipe but still block the path.

Bloody Jumper and Nicepoint were both trapped in place for a while by the Screamer, but thankfully it had no support. Log was able to flank around it and cut it down with a Heavy Bolter. Lord Tony and Dr. Block shot down the Horrors, but then a Tzaangor sniper dealt a major wound to Tony. Filipe turned that sniper into a fresh coat of paint for his bike. Now that the surface is secure, the marines all check their wargear and rearm for the journey below. Lord Tony, Master Matthew and Felipe are already injured and must be more cautious, leaving us with five full health marines. I feel woefully undermanned. Rather than kill everyone in the base, I hope to destroy the control console and force the base to self destruct.

Log and Master Matthew start us off right, by planting their Heavy Bolters on the railing and nailing a Rubric Marine with a hailstorm of munitions.

Most of the facility is quiet, as the marines clear it sector by sector. This worries me, as it means most of the enemies are likely concentrated in the main control center. It will be rough breaching the building, but that is why the Omnissiah provides us with Meltabombs. Slowly, the marines take positions around the structure, and Mr. Nobody even finds a potential firing position where he can take out the control consoles. Without them, the Plasma Generators will overload and destroy the entire base. But seeing how all my fighting will be concentrated in this one area, I might not even have to scuttle the base to achieve victory.

After Mr. Nobody punches a hole through the wall, Master Matthew begins taking precision shots at the consoles. The enemy doesn't take this sitting down of course, and a thrall-sorcerer sets the catwalks ablaze, melting them and fusing Matthew's ceramite plates together. The flames warp his essence, and he is left in the open while Log and Masterlegodude break through the thrall's psychic shield and put it down. Mr Nobody is able to deliver his body to Dr. Block to treat, but the corruption may run too deep...

But it's too late... (Dr. Block used all of his TUs to treat him EIGHT TIMES. He still succumbed to 'Light Corruption' when he started with 'Heavy Corruption'.)

Filipe avenges Matthew by slaying an Astartes Sorcerer, a highly dangerous foe. Proven to be so by controlling the mind of Bloody Jumper and turning him against his brothers for a time. Thankfully he regained control of himself just in time to dodge a plasma bolt. With the death of the sorcerer, the fighting quieted down significantly as the Rubrics pulled back toward some other part of the base. We kept our distance and plinked away at the control consoles while they were uncontested. Once our work was done, we grabbed Nicepoint (who was knocked unconscious by a rotor cannon) and put a live grenade in Master Matthew's tainted corpse and evacuated before we got caught in the meltdown.
