https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/the-stop-killing-games-movement-hits-another-major-milestone-as-a-game-preservation-bill-passes-california-state-assembly-vote/

A new piece of legislature in California would make it illegal for companies that have games, particularly single player games, with online requirements to take their servers permanently offline for games people have played to use. If they do so, they have to provide 60 days notice, and offer a way to continue to play the game in a singleplayer offline mode.

The Stop Killing Games movement is a recent effort to put an end to exploitative business practices by game studios that produce online only game that people pay for, but then shut down those games, effectively stealing from the customers.

oh hey, something kinda good actually happened. thank you, ladios.

Good stuff does happen quite a lot, I just always forget to post about it  :cookieMonster:

I've been following SKG for a while, it's been so cool to watch it grow up from the early days when barely anybody really cared to now where it's a legitimate political element. Single most hope inducing thing in the news. Every time I hear an update on it, I feel a little more like there's a way forward hat doesn't involve everyone knifing each other for bread in the streets.

Single most hope inducing thing in the news. Every time I hear an update on it, I feel a little more like there's a way forward hat doesn't involve everyone knifing each other for bread in the streets.
And this is all because of one Ross Scott whom got his start making Half Life 2 machinimas with just the Source SDK and being the voice/inner thoughts of Gordon Freeman

Man's come a long way

Man's come a long way

He almost, almost, was the voice of the emperor in Block Wars because I contacted him after he had posted the original 2009 video on his machinima website.

Never happened due to scheduling conflicts with him having time to do recording, this was right when the Game Dungeon was first blowing up and he started on this crazy journey, but for a brief shiny second, I almost got him to overlap with Blockland.

It's never too late if you're planning on doing the sequel trilogy in the next 10 years  :cookieMonster:

Somehow, Ross Scott has returned

This was posted in the SKG Discord today:

Today, the Ubisoft CEO is to convene with the European Commission at an 'invitation-only' meeting hosted by Video Games Europe and EGDF. This comes two weeks prior to plans set for the Commission to give their answer on our Stop Destroying Videogames ECI, and we were not invited.

Stop Killing Games has published an open letter in response. The main purpose of this letter is to inform everyone of what is going on so that we can all assess the Commission's response in light of these developments. Thus, we invite you to read it and share it for visibility. And for those of you who publish articles or videos, we humbly ask that you please write about it and make videos about it. The letter is available in the form of PNG / PDF attachments on this message but it is also available on Reddit, X / Twitter, Mastodon, and Bluesky. We thank our community and advocates for their continued support and contribution, the exposure they offer us, and the change they bring with us for everyone, everywhere. We stand together through victories and setbacks alike. And now is a crucial time. We need your voice. We need your all. Stand with us. SKG Forever!

It sounds like the CEO of Ubisoft is fixing to personally swing his big richard around in an effort to pump the brakes on all these rabble-rousing peasants. Will be very interested to see the outcome of this.
