In the winter?

I know some of them go underground....

They die, all except one. Then, come spring, it uses meiosis and multiplies but unfortunately the meiosis gene isn't transferred so all the insects gotta incest.

Eggs are hardy little things, they have a furnace built into each egg, allowing as much heat as they need, as long as they can find stuff to burn.
