Author Topic: Game Crashs as soon as I click icon, wtf  (Read 1503 times)

Ok, for those tech ppl that are going to parrot the same steps on trouble shoting let me at lest get this out first to save you guys sometime.

  • Video Driver up to date: Yes, unless the nVidia and MS websites are being pricks...  Card can run under Open GL or Direct X/3D... (whatever) if not... ****!
  • Powerful enuf compter:  Yes, even though it's very old it can still run new games fairly well.  Has a 1 Ghz CPU, 512 mb of ram, and a 128 mb GeForce FX 5200 card.
(I'm guessing those should meet the needed specs)
  • Read the FaQ and forums first: Did.. repeatedly when I had spare time to kill.  Couldn't find what I needed.  If a fix for it was there, I must be doing something wrong..
  • Post the error log file: Can't, it crashes that damn fast.  I've looked for any meaningful log file after trying to start Blockland, nothing new shows up.
  • Misc info: Win2k pro (Not Win ME. I hate it when ppl can tell the differance) Serv Pack 4  AMD Athlon processor.

Pic of error window included as well...

When I first noticed this game, I actually thought it was a neat idea.  Believe it or not, I clicked on an ad banner advertising it(honestly thought those things were full of BS for years) but anyway...

Possible causes

  • The fact that it is a GeForce FX.  Toyed around with an idea of swapping out for an older ATI card that might work (but haven't yet)
  • It's the OS.  I haven't been able to find any info on required OS for Blockland.

Unlikely causes
  • Corrupted DL: I have been able to install it and run on other computers (just not the private one at home)
  • Old/out-of-date/Unneeded-Legacy drivers:  I have updated, uninstalled, re-installed, re-updated etc... I haven't exhaustively troubleshooted this yet, but still... what are the odds if it is..

Any help would be nice.  If you need more info, just say so.And thanks for reading

Uninstall, do a fresh install.

Not exactly the kind of answer I was expecting... no offense.  It just hit me as "Of course I did you ****!!1!!1"

BUT, just to make sure it wasn't skipped, I did un-install and re-install Blockland, several times, in a different areas as well.  Still didn't work... damn...  Also, it turns out there really isn't an install shell for it lol.  I looked for the damn thing in the add/remove programs and gave up after realizing it wasn't there <_<

I also tried manually installing it when I noticed that it is after all just a self executing Rar file, no luck on that either.

Now that I remember, I did try installing and running it under an OS compatibility layer.  I doubted that making it think it's on Win 95 or whatever would have mattered, (which it didn't) but it was something to check.

Blockland is basically a homemade game using C++, right?  Is it possible that something like MS Visual Studio.net might have some effect on how the program is starting up?  I wouldn't be surprised if yet another integrated MS program ****ed things up again...

(Going to un-install Studio.net anyway. Hardly use it, and can use the space)

Can't seem to edit the last post with an update...

Anyway..

un-installing .Net didn't work.

I understand you are angry at this issue, but that doesn't give you an excuse to be an ass.
If you were serious about this, you would have posted what you have tried already.

I don't know what to suggest from here. Try a google search. I did find something regarding your graphics card having an error after update and not responding to OpenGL. Does it work on any other OpenGL games?

The comment I put in quotes showing it was just a candid reaction, it wasn't supposed to be taken that seriously.  Besides, why would I self censor if was actually insulting some one 0_o?!

I've done a lot of poking at it while I was looking though the forum and FAQ and then after finally breaking down and registered here.  I can't remember off hand everything that I've over the weeks, I'm giving you guys as much relevant detail as fast and as best as I can.  Ok maybe not fast... but still, I'm trying to be detailed here so I don't waste anyone's time

If I was an ass I would just say "it ****ing sucks, it's... blah blah" etc

....ANYWAY
Sorry for the mixed signals there...

Got some program called Driver Detective, and ... well, it basically told me that among other drivers, my Display adapter STILL isn't up to date.  Thanks nVidia and MS update sites <_<

Spent the last several hours updating Windows, and retrying the game.. still gives that error before it even opens up the log file...  It still doesn't get far enough to make a log file of the error wtf is going on?!

Oh yeah, I got around to removing all the old video drivers I can think of and then re-installed drivers for what I have plugged in... nothing.. :(

I have one or two more avenues left for getting the video driver up to par, but after that... ugh, I'm running out of things to check atm.

Damn it... is there an edit feature on the forum?

eh, anyway...

Something else I ran, found out that my AGP card is somehow in "PCI mode"

...

The other "avenue" just came up as a dead end... Said the best driver out there is the one that is already installed.

I'll be hacking at it for awhile longer before trying another video card.
(goes though drivers again)

Did you check if your computer system is on?

Shounds like yer forgeted

Yeah, I hope you didn't buy it yet. :P

Ahh, thanks guys for the reassurance and sympath...

Wait a second... YOU ****S !!1!!1!

lol :p

Buy it before testing the demo first? are you nuts!? XD

But still, fat-lot-a-good it does me; I originally wanted to play it at home on my spare time!

Anyway, thanks for reading, and thanks to the few that actuality tried to help.  I'll stop by here every now and then.  After all, I have to have some place to vent my ang... uh, to get tech help, right?

Don't worry, theres no place better to flame, insult, and hurt others than the BL forums.
