Author Topic: DO NOT PORT MODS YOU DID NOT CREATE  (Read 1683 times)

Porting mods from v8 to v9 can hurt the Blockland community. If done incorrectly, it can damage your Blockland. For example, someone ported the Zombie Mod. They didnt know that it forces bots(horses, Tank turrets) to act crazy if shot at. I know that most of you guys are doing it for reputation and this is a very bad way to gain it. Please leave it to the professionals.(Or ask the creators permission)

I have to agree, I never download ported mods unless I know they were ported by the person who made them in the first place. Like Peaceful War said, dont do it to try to gain respect, because if you port it wrong and it screws up someones game any respect you have will be gone.

Dude, chill out. Porting can be good. If they ported someones add-on, and did a crappy job, then off to the fail bin it goes.

If someone downloads em, It will spread like a virus. If the original creator wanted to make a new version of (for example) a weapon, and a guy ported the old version before the new one can be released, It would overwrite the shape files.

Please leave it to the professionals.

I have to agree.  People place way too much importance on being worshiped for making an Add-On, and way too little on actually understanding what it takes to make a good Add-On.  I'm all for newcomers developing some skills and releasing some new stuff, but the majority of v8 ports have come from noobs and have ended up in the Fail Bin.

Porting will forget over a lot of developers if they have plans.

They would have to deal with yet another annoyance-- making sure poorly crafted "ports" don't interfere with the mod.

I found this pretty ironic.

Lol I noticed that,  someone is gonna try to port the zombie mod (again) and will probably fail.

People who try to port add-ons from V8 to V9 should re-directed here, as many good points were made.

also i won't download any ported mods without permission like the IKEA house v2

EDIT: srry its a map

And how is this different from my original thread?

I like how space guy did his mods. He made it so you have to use his site to download it. If you wish for people to not port your mod then just take down the link in the site.

And how is this different from my original thread?
I had caps on =D

Once again:

I don't see what the big deal about this is.

There is nothing wrong with porting someone elses add-on if:

  • If the original author is active, ask if you can port it, and then credit the author.
  • If the original author is inactive, credit the author.
  • Make sure it works.
  • Don't do an awful job.
  • Don't port something that is downright horrible or overdone.

If someone downloads em, It will spread like a virus...
The only time, I remember, that a serious problem has occurred like this (where it effected you directly in-game instead of just hiding in your folders) was the Decal Virus.

This was in v0002. It was the default Decal file in a different filetype, and it appeared over your avatar ingame. If the host had it, it'd spread to any clients. If a client hosted, it'd spread to their clients.

But the mods introduced detections and deletion systems for this file, and killed it.

Luckily, this kind of pandemic isn't possible...decals can't do this...
