Author Topic: Dedicated Server lol  (Read 1245 times)

I'm talking to a guy about getting a dedicated server. It is more expensive than I thought it would be.

That sounds like it might be difficult with BL. Will he restart the game if the server crashes? What about addons? admin?

What kind of cost is it per month?

$385, and I get my own server to fool around with. I can install anything on to it, and I can increase the ram for $40 to 4GB. I might get this server...

$385 a month? god damn.

Why not just save up and build your own server and get an upgraded internet connection?

I could probably design a custom made server for $385 for you if you wanted. After that you would just need a better internet connection.

Here we go...

$179.99  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856110080  Barebones System
$119.99  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115052  CPU
$32.99    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820141064  Memory
$64.99    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500049  GPU
$54.99    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148261  HDD
------------
$452.95      OK...so I went a little over $385, but this will obviously last more than a month and the GPU I included is optional, the motherboard does come with an integrated chip already.

Specs (for those too lazy to look):

Memory : 2 x 1GB
GPU: 8600 GT 512mb
HDD : 250GB SATA 3gb/s.
CPU: Intel E7200

Considering that it is a dual core PC, you could technically host 2 games simultaneously on this one machine, and of course play BL with your other computer that you have right now.

You could earn back some of the cost of the machine and the improved internet connection by selling servers specifically  for Blockland.

$10/month x 2 servers x 12 months= $480 woops... $240

I could host with my current hosting computer, but it won't be as fast, but I might still make the moneys.

The idea for having a separate server (like the one I suggested above) is that you can host your servers 24/7 without having to disturb your normal use of your current computer. If you hosted the servers on one computer, its more likely that the clients would lag and/or the server would crash.

Come to think about it, even charging $15/month for a BL wouldn't be too bad. So that would be $360 a year.

I wonder if a Quad core PC would allow you to run 4 servers.....hmmm...

Badspot pays like $35 or something for the master server, and thats just as good as those several hundred servers.

Exactly, there is good money to be made in hosting your own server, or, if you want to have someone else host for you, it shouldn't cost $385! XD
