Author Topic: Should Bones start a saltwater aquarium?  (Read 4447 times)

I usually have a small freshwater aquarium going at any given time. Today, however, I found a twenty-gallon aquarium at a yard sale. I asked how much it was, and was astounded to find that it was $10 and included a giant bucket of filters, air systems, saltwater chemicals, food, carbon, etc...  I'm guessing about $250+ dollars worth of stuff.

On topic, I have heard "horror stories" about the difficulty and expense of running a saltwater aquarium. Considering I already have the supplies, should I go saltwater?

I would appreciate it if you would back up your statement with reasoning. Kthxbia.

The fish are more expensive, and it's probably harder to clean/change the water.

Also the temperature for many fish that people keep in saltwater aquariums requires you to have a heater I think.

Do research?

It came with a heater. I was just wondering if anyone here had experience with this sort of thing.

Get shark :)

Lol, it would be sweet if you could get Jellyfish.

Well here's my four three reason's.

1.running a salt water aquarium is a bitch.
2.you have to have the salt balance just right.
3.when you run out of supplies it's gonna burn a hole in your pocket.
4.fish are more expensive

anti got number four

It does look lovey, but Im sure it requires a lot of time. So no.

EDIT: After reading Zoneark's post, No.... plus one

3.when you run out of supplies it's gonna burn a hole in your pocket.

:(

i forgot to say you should just sell on e-bay for extra cash :D.

I'll sell the chemicals, but I'm keeping the aquarium. I needed a bigger one anyway.

If you do decide to go with it, heres a link I looked at to see how high the fish prices were. Some are more than $100.

actually i found one for $449.99

Saltwater fish are expensive. My uncle used to have some.

Don't buy fish that hate each other, then you'll just waste money.

I believe the amount of time, effort and money required to start and maintain a salt water tank would be wasteful. I have had many fish in the past in many different aquariums, but inevitably the result is the same. The entertainment and value of having a fish(s) is short lived and the cost is high.

You would be better off investing your time and money in other indeavours, perhaps those you have already started?
