Does the physical size of a monitor determine how much you can fit inside of it, or the resolution?

A guy I'm talking to thinks that a 22" monitor with the same res as a 19" fits more things on its screen.

Can you add a 'both' option?

Physical size you idiots, more  :iceCream: will fit on screen that is 22" than a screen that is 17". I, as a man who enjoys his  :iceCream:, would prefer more of it at all times. Good day.

You could have a 33" screen with half as much fitting on it as a 10" just because the 33" screen's tower is full of crudy hard ware that can't support a good resolution, but generally a larger screen will fit more because you won't get a good screen for a crudy computer. Oh, and Boshi your a twat.

I would think that the physical size is the amount of space on the screen, and the resolution is the "size" of the pixels.

So it's both

Actually I'm an idiot, it's virtual resolution, physical size just determines how big the pixels look

Christopher: a smaller monitor will scale down a larger image

...

What a handicap. That's both basic COmputer/Tech AND Physics. Also Geometry and Common Sense.

I think badspot is right in saying that in this day and age there is no reason that no one can not bring an answer to anything due to Google and the internet.

too many negatives, rephrase?

What the hell are you "..."ing me for? If you view an image on a smaller monitor it will scaled to fit your monitor.

I am not an idiot, I do comprehend what resolution and physical size refers to.

Assuming you sit an equal distance from 2 monitors, one 19" and one 22", both with a resolution of 1680x1050, you will be able to view more within the frame of the 22" monitor.

The clarity of the 2 monitors (the ability to read the text and view the fine details of images) will be equal on the 2 monitors, however the 22" monitor will function better at a more reasonable distance.

If you move the 19" monitor closer to your eyes then yes, you will essentially be viewing your documents in the same way you would a 22" monitor. If you keep the 19" monitor at the same distance, at the same resolution (1680x1050) then you will likely find most text to be unreadable.

My point isn't that resolution doesn't matter. My point was that it is wise and practical to choose a monitor with a standard resolution (IE. 1440x900 for most 19" monitors and 1680x1050 for 22") unless you wish to sit a fair amount closer to the screen.

No, they're the same resolution, the resolution tells how much will be shown. Not the monitor's size. Though it's easier to see on the bigger monitor. Which brings me to my next point.

So you're saying that the clarity of a 1" monitor and 22" monitor would be the same? It's impossible for a 1 pixel monitor to have the same kind of clarity as a monitor that has more pixels.

EDIT: forget, Kaphix linked me to this forum so I thought he just made it today or something, so then I posted my thoughts, sorry for the slight bump.

Assuming the resolution is the same, the 22" will still be easier to read and use as everything on the screen will be physically larger but the proportions for the UI will remain the same. Hence a 22" monitor makes more sense.

The clarity of an image is determined by the number of pixels used to display an object or UI element. Assuming you could find a 1" monitor with 1680x1050 resolution, it would still have the same clarity as the 22" monitor, but it would be more difficult to see.
