Author Topic: Stem Cell Research Survey  (Read 2742 times)

So I had to make a survey for any topic at school, and I need like at least 25 of them filled out.  Im already late to turn it in, so I figured i can get it done fast on the forums.  Please be serious when you fill it out.  Also I know theres not many females on the forums, but if you can please help out.  Its suppose to be only high school students too.

Survey:  Stem Cell Research

Age:_____
Gender:_____

What are Stem Cells:  Stem cells can develop into different cell types. They may offer a renewable source of replacement cells to treat diseases, conditions, and disabilities.  There are two types of stem cells, embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells.  Embryonic stem cells come from human embryos.

Do you think research on stem cells, can benefit everyone?     Yes or No
Do you think sacrificing an embryo to help others is okay?
a.   Absolutely
b.   Undecided
c.   No way

On a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being none, and 5 being many, how many people do you know personally know that would benefit from the stem cell?
1           2          3            4            5

Stem cells already have the potential to cure several diseases and/or injuries, how many people  do you think can benefit from the stem cell overall?______

Do you think the government should continue funding this research?  Yes or No

Do you SUPPORT or OPPOSE embryonic stem cell research?
Why?

Would you rather we just used adult stem cells instead of embryonic stem cells? (Adult Stem Cells aren’t as “effective” as embryonic stem cells, they’re more limited)

Did you know about Stem Cell Research before you took this survey?  Yes or No

If you could, would you contribute to this research? Yes or No

Yeah I whipped this stuff up quick, so I know its crap but i just need answers.

I support it because we could cure many disorders of the brain with them.

Goin good so far

I thought stem cell research used cells from the umbilical cord? not from embryos?

Do you think the government should continue funding this research?  Yes

Do you SUPPORT or OPPOSE embryonic stem cell research? Support
Why? Because sacrificing things that aren't yet alive for the good of the Human Race is a more logical idea.

Would you rather we just used adult stem cells instead of embryonic stem cells? (Adult Stem Cells aren’t as “effective” as embryonic stem cells, they’re more limited) No, that's a dumb Idea. If you had the choice between a cheap Ferrari that's in-stock and an expensive station wagon that may never exist, which would you buy?

There you go.

They can use cells from an umbilical cord as well.  I think they use embryos more though.  Theyre easier to make.

Thanks Yuki

I'll answer the survey, then sum up my thoughts on stem cell (and abortion) stuff.

It is fundamental research that could no doubt benefit mankind in so many ways (not only chromic although that is the most pressing current matter). To mark it as absolute taboo for whatever reasons, be it philosophical notion or religious, would cause a huge amount of medical science advancements and technologies to be slowed significantly until other methods to stem cell research are developed. With ever growing world populace, we can't exactly afford to waste that time without paying the consequences.

Personally, I simply don't see why not to use embryos. For a much older fetus in the later terms, on the other hand, I would object.

Yes

My thoughts on the whole deal is simply this: Embryos are human in too few aspects to be of any value in the very early terms. During this time period, abortions and stem cell research are a-ok here and I'll get to why in a bit. As it grows and develops into a fetus, it will begin to gain more human characteristics. I would say this is the point where it is no longer a good idea, and only abortions to prevent some serious issues to the mother or due to terrible life conditions the newborn might be brought into if it was born. During the later terms, only extreme cases should be allowed an abortion. The mother herself who feels attachment to the fetus would likely agree that abortion at this point isn't a very nice choice.

This is speaking to people who think an embryo's worth is Absolute, always the same, always this or always that and so always right/wrong to do whatever with it. Thing is, an embryo's worth as a human being is technically accumulated as it develops, so how can it's worth be absolute? It changes. It takes on a human form and the mother herself and everyone around her develop an attachment to it as it becomes more and more human. The others not so much until they see pictures, but the mother most certainly does. From an Ethical point of view, it's basically accumulative, and of course varies heavily depending on the circumstances.

Edit: Apparently medical scientists work fast as forget because they're already bypassing this whole issue by having stem cells reprogrammed from the adult human body, and are pretty close to getting it right.
