Everyone skin is brown, just different shades of it. That's why if you're white you turn brown/bronze or whatever when you tan.

Guess it has to do with where people lived. The sun was less intense in the north so the uneeded pigment disappeared. While in Africa the sun is very powerful so they became dark to protect their skin. Evolution :O
