Use the hook to lower yourself down bit by bit. It seems like after the word 'Volcano' appears your hook vanishes (the hook probably can't work across the transition from wilderness - volcano), so to be safe you should always hook directly after the word 'Volcano' appears. After the word comes up it's not far to the bottom.

Fire Orcs that drop dyno-mite when you kill them and crates with black, pitch black, and magenta dyes. The crates are currently spawning outside of the volcano though.

I just hook down as as slowly as possible and once "Volcano" appears,( the volcano interrior is somewhere way up in the sky) franticly shoot the hook at the walls.

As Ned said, it's most likely somewhere in the sky like the shop or D1/D2. The ideal thing to do is to hook in slowly to kill your fall speed by a bit and then once the message "Volcano" appears hook upward immediately.
